On May 30th, in Washington, according to a statement from the US State Department , Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov on expanding cooperation in the areas of energy, trade, and security.
Both sides also noted the positive developments in bilateral relations and recent progress in trade cooperation.
Foreign Minister Rubio praised the progress Turkmenistan has made in the field of trade in recent months.
During the talks, the US Secretary of State reaffirmed the commitment to supporting the country in diversifying its natural gas export routes, particularly through the development of transportation capacity along the Trans-Caspian Corridor.
The statement said that Secretary of State Rubio expressed Washington's strong support for diversifying the Central Asian nation's gas exports through the trans-Caspian shipping routes.
The proposed Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project aims to transport natural gas from Turkmenistan across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan, before being further distributed to European and other markets around the world . The project has long been seen as a solution to reduce reliance on traditional pipelines and enhance energy security for both Central Asia and Europe.
Although no specific timeline or financial commitment has been announced, Washington's reaffirmation of support for the project is seen as a significant "diplomatic boost" to this plan, which has been delayed for many years.
According to energy experts, political backing from the US could help attract more investment and facilitate negotiations with Caspian Sea countries regarding the project.
