On August 30, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a recent joint operation by US and Iraqi forces had killed 15 members of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in western Iraq.

CENTCOM is the agency responsible for overseeing U.S. military operations in the Middle East, including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen.
According to a statement on social media platform X, CENTCOM said the operation, which began on the morning of August 29, caused no civilian casualties, but seven US soldiers were injured in the attack.
The campaign's objective is to target IS leaders in order to disrupt and reduce the organization's ability to plan, organize, and carry out attacks against Iraqi civilians, American citizens, and allies and partners, both regionally and globally .
According to CENTCOM, Iraqi security forces will continue to search the area.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Iraqi army said that among those killed were several key figures of IS, but did not elaborate.
The forces also destroyed all of IS's weapons, logistical equipment, and hideouts, neutralized explosive devices, and seized numerous important documents, personal papers, and communication equipment.
The US currently has approximately 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria, as part of the international coalition against ISIS. Since the conflict erupted in the Gaza Strip (October 2023), US and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been targeted by dozens of drone and missile attacks.
US forces have conducted multiple retaliatory strikes in both countries. Last week, US forces also announced they had killed a high-ranking leader of a military branch linked to Al-Qaeda in Syria.
