Following a meeting in the Situation Room lasting approximately two hours on May 29, a White House official stated that President Donald Trump would only sign a peace agreement with Iran if it benefited the United States and met certain conditions.

US President Donald Trump monitors the military operation against Iran in the situation room in Washington, March 2, 2026.

Earlier, in a lengthy social media post, President Trump also announced the meeting in the Situation Room, reiterating his long-standing demands that Iran agree never to develop nuclear weapons and reopen the vital shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also wrote that Tehran would have to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz and not charge fees for passage through the waterway, in exchange for the US lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. Furthermore, the two countries would cooperate in removing and destroying Iran's enriched uranium. Regarding the conflict reparations Iran is demanding, Trump wrote: "No money will be exchanged until further notice."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei immediately rejected the conditions, stating that the two sides were continuing talks but had not reached a final agreement. In a telephone interview with state television IRIB, Baqaei reiterated that, for Iran, the focus of the current negotiations is on ending the conflict, and that at this stage, there is no detailed discussion of issues related to Tehran's uranium enrichment or enriched uranium activities. Regarding the possibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei stressed that future management of the strait "only concerns Iran and Oman."

Meanwhile, speaking in a phone call with the Omani Foreign Minister, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stressed that reaching an agreement with the US on ending hostilities in the Middle East would depend on Washington abandoning its stringent demands.

Regarding the ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran, the New York Times reported on May 29, citing several diplomats, that the draft Memorandum of Understanding between Washington and Tehran includes provisions for a post-conflict "investment fund" with the potential to transfer billions of dollars to Iran if a final agreement is signed. This is an international "investment fund" facilitated by the US, and the plan for establishing this fund will be discussed during the subsequent negotiations. According to an unnamed Iranian official, the fund is in fact a "reconstruction program" with an estimated total value of up to $300 billion.

In previous rounds of negotiations, Tehran demanded that Washington compensate for bomb and missile damage in the amount of $300 billion to $1 trillion.

The above information comes after US media reported on May 28 that US and Iranian negotiators had agreed on a memorandum to extend the ceasefire for another 60 days and begin talks on Iran's nuclear program. The agreement needs to be ratified by President Trump.
