The US and Iran have reached an agreement, awaiting a final decision from President Trump.

US and Iranian negotiators are believed to have reached a preliminary agreement to extend the ceasefire and initiate new talks on Tehran's nuclear program. However, the agreement is not yet in effect as US President Donald Trump has not given final ratification.

According to Axios, citing two US officials and a regional source involved in the mediation process, US and Iranian negotiators have agreed on a 60-day memorandum of understanding. If signed, this would be the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since military tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran escalated in the Middle East.

A U.S. official said the immediate goal of the agreement is to create a framework for bringing the parties back to the negotiating table. “This is an agreement aimed at bringing all parties back into the negotiating process. The specific details will continue to be addressed during negotiations,” the source said.

Awaiting a decision from the White House.

According to US sources, most of the memorandum's content was agreed upon earlier this week, but both Washington and Tehran need approval from high-level leaders before formal signing.

The US said that Iran subsequently informed the mediators that it had received the necessary approvals and was ready to sign the agreement. However, Tehran has not yet issued public confirmation.

US negotiators have briefed President Donald Trump on the details of the agreement, but he has not yet agreed. A US official revealed that Trump wants more time to consider the offer before making a final decision.

This is not the first time the White House has believed the two sides are close to reaching an agreement. In previous phases of the conflict, Washington had repeatedly hoped for a breakthrough, but the negotiation process has repeatedly stalled.

What's in the memorandum of understanding?

According to the draft memorandum of understanding, maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz will be guaranteed "unrestricted." A US official said this means no harassment of commercial vessels or imposition of transit fees, and Iran must remove all mines in the area within 30 days.

The US also plans to lift the naval blockade as commercial shipping resumes. In addition, Washington will grant some sanctions waivers to allow Iran to resume oil exports.

The memorandum also includes Iran's commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. During the 60 days of negotiations, the two priority issues will be how to handle Iran's highly enriched uranium and the future of its uranium enrichment program.

In return, the US committed to discussing the possibility of easing sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian assets. The document also addressed mechanisms to assist Iran in receiving goods and humanitarian aid.

One notable point is that the draft memorandum also addresses ending the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon. According to Axios , this is an issue that previously led to at least one tense exchange between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

While negotiations are still ongoing, the US and Iran are believed to have had two clashes in the Strait of Hormuz within the past 48 hours, highlighting the sensitivity of the regional security situation.

U.S. officials insist there will be no “secret deal” or confidential clause regarding the easing of sanctions or the transfer of funds to Iran. They argue that the extent of Tehran’s concessions on its nuclear program will determine the benefits it may receive.

Washington also said that Iran had made some verbal commitments regarding potential concessions on the nuclear issue, but the US remained cautious. "We'll only know for sure when the two sides actually go into the negotiating room," a US official said.

All options remain open.

According to US officials, the memorandum also addresses the goal of promoting "regional peace," with the Trump administration expecting further negotiations to expand to the issue of Iran's support for allied forces in the Middle East.

However, Washington also warned that if Iran fails to meet its demands regarding its nuclear program, the U.S. remains open to all options, including economic and military measures. The withdrawal of U.S. forces deployed to the region will also depend on the final outcome of the negotiations.

While major news agencies have reported on the signing, neither Washington nor Tehran has yet issued an official statement regarding the memorandum of understanding. In a statement on May 27th, President Donald Trump said he was "not in a hurry," indicating that the process towards a final agreement remains uncertain.
