Upon taking his medical history, Mr. D. stated that since the beginning of 2024, he had been experiencing sharp pain in his spine and had visited a medical facility for examination. He was diagnosed with a herniated disc. He took medication and underwent regular physical therapy, which relieved the pain, but the pain intensified when he stopped taking the medication. One time, while standing, Mr. D. collapsed to the ground. Realizing his condition had worsened, he went to Gia Dinh People's Hospital for a health check.
On September 19th, Dr. Duong Thanh Tung, Head of the Neurosurgery Department at Gia Dinh People's Hospital, stated that after X-rays and MRI scans, Mr. D. was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, L4-L5 and L5-S1 disc herniation, and severe nerve compression. He was scheduled for surgery using minimally invasive intervertebral bone grafting via an oblique lateral incision (OLIF).

The surgery was successful thanks to the collaboration between doctors from the Neurosurgery Department of Gia Dinh People's Hospital and the professional support of Associate Professor Dinh Ngoc Son, Head of the Spinal Surgery Department, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
Four days after the surgery, Mr. D. was able to walk normally and was preparing to be discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Tung, thanks to modern equipment, OLIF surgery is now performed using minimally invasive techniques. As a result, this method is effective, safe, reduces complications and sequelae, and preserves the maximum possible anatomical structures of the patient's spine.
"This also demonstrates our continuous efforts in updating advanced treatment methods, providing the most effective and beneficial techniques for people with spinal diseases such as herniated discs, spinal degeneration, injuries, and spinal deformities," Dr. Tung shared.
