Improve knowledge and life skills for children

“In addition to material support, we focus on improving their spiritual life, equipping them with social knowledge and self-defense skills in situations and risks that could affect them,” said Mr. Ho Thanh Hai, Director of the Social Work Center (CTXH) of Can Tho City, sharing about the effectiveness of the work of protecting, caring for and educating children in special circumstances.

The City Social Work Center in coordination with the Board of Directors of the Phu Thu Youth Club and the Hung Phu Ward Youth Union recently organized a consultation session to support school psychology with the topic "Safe and responsible behavior skills on social networks". The atmosphere of the consultation session became more lively when the reporter raised issues and situations related to smartphones, such as: usage time, knowledge, and areas of interest when "surfing" social networks. In particular, the students were excited about the suggestion of instructions on skills to build personal image, to be an inspirational person on social networks. Through the consultation session, the reporter helped the students recognize the smart use of social networks, not to be lured, led, or disoriented; at the same time, calmly verify baseless, harmful information that negatively affects their thinking and behavior.

The city's Social Work Center has also coordinated with junior high and high schools (with the Youth Club model) in wards and communes to organize specialized communication sessions on cyber safety; building beautiful friendships, preventing and combating school violence, etc., attracting a large number of members and students to participate. In addition, the management board of the Youth Clubs integrates propaganda content on related issues that directly negatively affect students in regular meetings. Mr. Tran Huu Du, Vice Chairman of the Youth Club of Tan Thoi, Phong Dien commune, said: "The Management Board of the Club closely follows current events; diversifies the forms and content of activities so that students can easily absorb and remember useful knowledge, and improve life skills."

In order to improve the effectiveness of the social work model in schools, the Center has implemented a plan for individual and group school psychological support consultation in 2025, for students, parents, teachers and staff at educational institutions. For group consultations, through the forms of exchange, testing and discussion, the Center conveys specific, practical content, skills to solve difficulties or social issues of concern, such as: preventing and responding to personal psychological crises; resolving conflicts, building healthy friendships; preventing and speaking up against school violence; building image, enhancing self-confidence and personal qualities. Regarding individual consultations, the Center arranges psychologists for each individual case on psychological crisis issues, academic stress, exam pressure; friendship, love at school age; low self-esteem, anxiety, lack of direction, loss of motivation to study; withdrawal, lack of communication, difficulty integrating; negative signs such as dropping out of school, skipping classes, thoughts of self-harm, etc. Mr. Ho Thanh Hai, Director of the City Social Work Center, said: “Through discussions and surveys of the needs of secondary schools, these are practical problems of students that schools and parents are particularly concerned about. The Center strives to coordinate communication activities at schools to spread practical and useful information.”

The Counseling Department, the City Social Work Center has just coordinated to organize a thematic activity "Skills to make friends and build healthy relationships" for a group of children in special circumstances. Thereby, the children are equipped with knowledge and communication skills with teachers, friends... to form good relationships, respecting everyone around them. With the group work method, the children are guided to practice handling common situations in life about building and maintaining harmonious friendships, without hurting each other. Mr. Ho Thanh Hai shared: "We are implementing the model "Social integration for subjects at the Center". Nearly 20 children in special circumstances live and grow up in a collective environment, so the Center focuses on observing and providing psychological counseling for each individual; educating life skills, enhancing the spirit of solidarity, love, and helping each other. At the same time, encouraging the children to study hard, practice, overcome self-consciousness, and rise up in life".
