Upgrading and expanding Provincial Road 575b to serve economic development.

Việt NamViệt Nam03/11/2024

The Traffic Maintenance Management Board (QLBTGT) under the Quang Tri Department of Transport is responsible for the regular management and maintenance of roads, including Provincial Road 575b, a crucial traffic artery connecting National Highway 1 from Gio Linh town to the eastern branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway. Currently, this provincial road is undergoing upgrades and expansion in many sections.

Provincial Road 575b is 12.1 km long, classified as a level 4 road in the plains, with a roadbed width of 9 m and a road surface width of 5.5 m made of asphalt concrete. Its starting point intersects National Highway 1 at km 743+703 in Gio Linh town, and its end point intersects the eastern branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway at km 1067+625 in Xuan Hoa village, Gio An commune, Gio Linh district.

According to the Traffic Management Board, the route passes through the territory of four communes and towns: Gio Linh town, Gio Chau commune, Phong Binh commune, and Gio An commune. This is an important road for transportation in the western part of Gio Linh district, connecting with the northwestern region of the province via the eastern branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway. Therefore, the traffic density on the route is quite high, causing many sections of the road to frequently deteriorate and suffer severe damage. Investment in maintenance is needed to ensure safe and smooth traffic, promote socio-economic development in the region, and contribute to national defense and security.

In recent years, Provincial Road 575b has received significant investment for repair and maintenance on many sections. In 2021, the Department of Transport invested nearly 5 billion VND to repair the road surface and drainage system of two severely damaged sections passing through two densely populated areas: the section from km 0+000 to km 1+000 and the section from km 7+200 to km 7+900. This included maintaining the original roadbed width of 9m and road surface width of 5.5m; reinforcing each side shoulder with a width of 0.75m using asphalt paving and a 1m earthen shoulder; and constructing a longitudinal drainage system and drainage culverts across local roads.

The road surface in these two sections was repaved with asphalt concrete. In 2022, the Department of Transport continued to invest more than 14 billion VND to carry out road surface repair and drainage ditch construction on many sections of the severely damaged DT.575B route.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ninh, a resident of Phong Binh commune who frequently travels on this road, said that since the road was upgraded and widened, its quality has improved, the surface is no longer uneven, making travel much safer for the people. Not only him, but also the residents living along this road are very satisfied.

However, many sections of Provincial Road 575b remain unupgraded, making traffic difficult. Therefore, in July 2024, the Department of Transport approved the economic -technical report for the investment in repairing the roadbed and surface of the sections from km 5+982 to km 6+458 and from km 8+400 to km 9+000 of the provincial road, assigning the Road Maintenance Management Board as the investor's representative. Accordingly, based on the old roadbed width of 9.0m and the old road surface width of 5.5m, the road will be widened on both sides to ensure a total road width of 7.0m (ensuring the road meets the standards of a Class IV road for the entire route).

Reinforce the road base and surface with 5cm thick C16 asphalt concrete. Additionally, reinforce the shoulders and slopes of the embankment between km 8+400 and km 8+837.56 with cement concrete to ensure roadbed stability; reinforce the longitudinal drainage ditches with trapezoidal paving slabs combined with reinforced cement concrete shoulders in densely populated areas. Construct two new longitudinal drainage culverts on the left side of the route at km 5+998.31 and km 8+785.07; and connect five locations with existing cross roads according to the current situation.

Simultaneously, reinforce the road shoulders on the section from km 5+982 - km 6+147.20 (left side) with a length of 155.0m and the section from km 8+400 - km 8+837.56 (both sides of the route) with a length of 800.77m. For the section from km 8+412.04 - km 8+822.60, to ensure roadbed stability, reinforce the embankment slopes with cement concrete with a total length of 721.84m, of which 382.76m is on the left side and 339.08m is on the right side. Utilize, adjust, and raise the existing road signs and centerline markings.

In addition, 54 marker posts will be added along the route at curves and intersections; 4 triangular signs will be installed, detailing the signaling system in compliance with the National Technical Standard on Road Traffic Signs QCVN41:2019/BGTVT... The project is currently being implemented and aims for completion in 2024 using local transportation budget funds.

According to the Department of Transport, based on the project list, the Traffic Management Board is striving to ensure construction progress, quality, and timely disbursement of 100% of the allocated capital plan in order to gradually complete the project, contributing to increasing the lifespan of the works, increasing operational efficiency, and ensuring traffic safety for people and vehicles participating in traffic.

According to Vo Dac Hoa, Chairman of the Gio Linh District People's Committee, in addition to serving the socio-economic development of the western region of the district, this is an important road connecting to National Highway 1, serving tourists from all over the country when they visit the Truong Son National Martyrs' Cemetery. The district hopes that the Department of Transport will soon complete the upgrading of the remaining section of the route so that the daily transportation of the people will be more convenient and safer.
