NASA and IBM have just introduced Surya, an open-source AI model to more accurately predict solar storms. Surya was trained from 250 terabytes of data collected by the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
Solar storms occur when the Sun releases energy and particles into space, which can disrupt radio waves and threaten astronauts. (Photo: IBM) In testing, Surya predicted solar flares two hours in advance, double the current warning time.
According to IBM expert Juan Bernabe-Moreno, this AI can not only determine the shape and location but also estimate the intensity of the spark. Scientists hope Surya will uncover hidden patterns to better explain when storms occur. In addition to predicting solar storms, the model also helps study the connection between space weather and Earth's climate.
NASA and IBM believe that Surya will open up new understanding of other stars, turning the Sun into humanity's "natural laboratory." Readers are invited to watch more videos : Iris scanning tool to verify human identity | VTV24
