New features of Phu My homeland

Having been recognized as a New Rural Commune (NTM) in 2016, Phu My commune in Phu Tan district currently meets 17 out of 19 NTM criteria according to the 2021-2025 criteria set. In 2025, the commune aims to achieve advanced NTM standards, having currently met 10 out of 19 criteria.

The countryside of Phu My commune has undergone a remarkable transformation, with modern houses lining newly opened concrete roads and neatly trimmed hedges. This is the result of the New Rural Development program.

Mr. Nguyen Truong Son, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: "The most noticeable change is the improved rural infrastructure, creating favorable conditions for travel and trade for local people. Also, thanks to the New Rural Development program, people have changed their mindset, awareness, way of thinking, and methods of doing things, applying science and technology to production."

The people of Phu My actively exploit their potential, leverage local strengths, and replicate many effective models, fostering linkages and support in production management and development. As a result, many effective models such as intensive, super-intensive, and improved two-stage extensive shrimp farming; vegetable cultivation; shrimp farming in earthen ponds; and integrated shrimp and crab farming have helped increase income and improve the lives of the people.

Many people in the commune utilize the land around their homes to grow crops and fruit trees, yielding high economic returns.

To date, Phu My commune has achieved an average per capita income of over 60 million VND/year. The commune now has only 7 poor households, accounting for 0.31%; and 18 near-poor households, accounting for 0.80% of the total number of households in the commune.

With economic development, local people have the means to invest in building and renovating their homes. Statistics show that the percentage of solid and semi-solid houses in the area is over 83%, with over 70% of households having built concrete fences or planted trees, contributing to a greener, cleaner, and more beautiful rural environment.

In recent years, the locality has focused on investing in and improving the rural transportation network. In 2024 alone, through the mobilization of resources, the commune completed the construction of nearly 6,000 meters of concrete roads, bringing the total number of concrete roads in the commune to over 130,000 meters. The muddy, difficult-to-navigate roads of the past are now easily accessible by car, shortening the distance between rural and urban areas.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, from Ba Tiem hamlet, shared: “Since the launch of the New Rural Development movement, thanks to state investment and the contributions of the people in building rural transportation infrastructure, the face of the countryside has become increasingly vibrant. Concrete roads connect hamlets and villages, and the people are delighted.”

Building new rural areas and advanced new rural areas is a continuous, long-term process with a starting point but no end point, and is the task of the entire political system, aiming to constantly improve the material and spiritual quality of life for the people. The commune will continue to implement the program in the direction of comprehensively improving the quality of criteria; building new rural areas with spacious and modern socio-economic infrastructure, meeting the needs of rapid and sustainable development of the locality.

“Looking ahead, the commune will focus on improving the quality of the criteria already achieved and strive to meet the standards for the remaining criteria. Specifically in economic development, we will focus on building a collective economy, encouraging people to participate in cooperatives, linking production, and guaranteeing product sales. We aim to build the commune to meet the advanced new rural development standards as planned,” Mr. Nguyen Truong Son added.
