Woltemade is expected to replace Isak. |
Although financial details were not disclosed, British media reported the deal was worth around £69m, breaking Newcastle's previous record of £63m for Alexander Isak three years ago.
Woltemade came through the Werder Bremen youth system and made his Bundesliga debut in 2020 at the age of 17, becoming the club's youngest ever player to play in Germany's top flight. He moved to Stuttgart last year and has scored 17 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
With Isak absent as he pushes for a move to Liverpool, Woltemade was expected to settle in quickly and make his mark. However, he failed to register for his debut in Newcastle's away game against Leeds United.
Manager Eddie Howe said he was pleased the deal had been completed so quickly, stressing that Woltemade fits the type of attacking player the club is looking for. Howe commented that the 23-year-old has good technique, has proven his ability in a top European league, and is still young enough to continue developing at Newcastle.
Woltemade, who stands 1.98m tall, has been capped twice by Germany and has just been called up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Northern Ireland in September. He admits leaving Germany is a big step in his career, but insists he feels at home at Newcastle.
The striker said that after talking to the head coach, he felt that this was the right place to develop his full potential. Woltemade affirmed that from the first contact, he realized that the club had big plans for him.
