On Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sinner faced a tough test against Shapovalov. However, after saving a break point to avoid a 0-4 deficit in the third set, the Italian made a dramatic comeback, winning nine games in a row. From a possible early exit, Sinner turned the match into a relatively easy third-round victory.
“It was a very difficult match today. I have known Denis for a long time, so I knew I had to play at my best today. I am very happy to win. He started very well. I had to keep my spirits up,” Sinner said in his on-field interview.

Sinner had not dropped more than three games in a set in his first two rounds at Flushing Meadows, winning 12 of his final 15 games against Shapovalov, extending his hard-court winning streak to 24. With the three-hour, 12-minute victory, the 24-year-old became the fourth-youngest player to win 20 matches at all four Grand Slams, after Rafael Nadal, Boris Becker and Novak Djokovic.
“The second week is completely different. You see less people backstage. That’s always a great sign that I’m still here. It’s getting harder and harder, physically and mentally. This is obviously a special place for me. It was my first Grand Slam main draw here, and I won last year,” said Sinner, as he prepares for a fourth-round meeting with either Tommy Paul or Alexander Bublik.
The 27th seed Shapovalov made a flying start to the third round, but he was unable to hold on to his advantage as he let his chances slip away in the third set. The Canadian's chances of winning were dashed by nine double faults, including three in one game, giving Sinner the chance to break serve to take the third set 4-3.

Despite not hitting his best shots in the first half, Sinner's performance to close out the win was impressive. The 20-time major champion won 84 percent (54/64) of his first-serve points to level the series at 1-1 with Shapovalov.
Sinner, now 34-4 on the season, will face either 14th-seeded Paul or 23rd-seeded Bublik for a place in the quarterfinals. Aside from Carlos Alcaraz, who has beaten Sinner three times in 2025, Bublik is the only player to have beaten the Italian in 2025. The Kazakh edged Sinner in three sets on the grass courts of Halle in June.
Sinner, aiming to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open men's singles title since Roger Federer in 2000, has also given a boost to his hopes of retaining the world No. 1 ranking after the US Open. He must overcome Alcaraz at the New York Grand Slam if he is to stop the Spaniard from reclaiming the top spot.
