Holding breath waiting for 'action movie' in the transfer market

The final few hours of the 2025 summer transfer window could decide the success or failure of the entire season for a series of big clubs such as Chelsea, Man United, Newcastle and Man City.

The contrasting situations of Liverpool and Man United

At 7:00 p.m. on September 1 in the UK, or 1:00 a.m. on September 2 in Vietnam, the European football transfer market for the summer of 2025 will officially close.

Big teams have a whole summer to prepare, but as usual, they always "run around" at the last minute of the transfer market.

Why? Firstly, to avoid being overcharged. A typical example is the case of Alexander Isak's transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool.

A month ago, when Isak publicly announced his intention to leave, Newcastle put a price tag of £150 million (€173 million) on the Swedish striker, and almost only Liverpool had the financial means to approach.

But the "Red Brigade" were not foolish, they offered an initial price of only 120 million euros, far below Newcastle's expectations. Liverpool deliberately "hid" this deal until the last day, forcing Newcastle into a situation where they had no choice but to sell when their striker no longer had the heart to stay at St James's Park.

In the end, this morning Liverpool successfully closed the deal to buy Isak for 144 million euros, nearly 30 million euros less than Newcastle's desired price.

But that's just a small number. In reality, with "blockbuster" contracts, very few clubs dare to implement the same method as Liverpool.

The main reason why big teams rush around at the last minute of the transfer market comes from variables that appear when the season starts in the first few rounds.

The Premier League kicks off in mid-August, and two weeks is more than enough time for the big clubs to realise their problems.

Like Man United, after a summer of shopping sprees with three superstar strikers (Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko), they faced a harsh reality: unable to deploy their playing style due to a lack of central midfielders.

Not only that, Man United also has a big problem in the goalkeeper position, something that the team's leadership has been hesitant to solve for the past year.

The final few hours of the transfer window therefore promise to be very exciting for Man United.

The teams sitting on fire

Transfermarkt - a reputable transfer website has compiled a long list of transfer rumors related to Man United and assessed the likelihood of these rumors becoming true.

Accordingly, on the selling side, Man United is likely to push Sancho to Aston Villa (62% chance of a successful deal), push Malacia to Besiktas (73%), and a not-so-low rate - push Kobbie Mainoo to Atletico Madrid (48%).

If successful with these three deals, Man United could pocket around 70-80 million euros, enough for them to pursue a blockbuster for their midfield.

On the buying side, Man United has reached an agreement with both goalkeepers Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) and Lammens (Antwerp). But the "red devils" must decide whether to buy both or only choose one.

If they want to buy both, Man United will have to let Onana go, and that would be another sensational transfer.

More importantly, the midfield. Transfermarkt assesses that Man United will most likely buy one of three famous midfielders: Stiller (Stuttgart), Wharton (Crystal Palace) or Baleba (Brighton).

None of these are priced below €50m, and could go up to €100m as the clubs that own them know what Man United's needs are.

Chelsea in dilemma with Nicolas Jackson - Photo: REUTERS

Similar to Man United is Newcastle, the team forced to buy another striker after letting Isak leave.

Newcastle spent €80m on Woltemade last week, but a striker is not enough, especially when they have just received almost double that amount from Isak.

Newcastle are currently trying to speed up their bid for both strikers Wissa (Brentford) and Strand Larsen (Wolverhampton). Both are worth no less than 50 million euros.

One problem that arises is serious injuries. Typical examples are Rayan Cherki of Man City or Liam Delap of Chelsea.

Both stars have recently suffered serious injuries, and will likely be sidelined for 2-3 months.

The matter was so serious that Chelsea made a very inhumane decision to cancel the loan deal for Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich.

The Senegalese striker was made redundant at Stamford Bridge this summer, following the arrivals of Delap and Pedro, and had to wait two months before being loaned out to Bayern Munich.

But as soon as he arrived in Germany, Jackson was recalled to Chelsea because Delap was injured. The Senegalese striker was obviously angry.

Even Chelsea fans sympathized with Jackson. They believed the club should let him go and urgently look for a replacement.

Chelsea are likely to let Jackson go, meaning they will have to scramble around in the final hours of the transfer window.

A series of attractive transfer scenarios promise to appear in the last few hours of the transfer market and will decide the success or failure of the whole season of big teams.
