Coach Ten Hag was suddenly fired after only 3 matches.

(Dan Tri) - Leverkusen Club has decided to part ways with coach Erik ten Hag after only 3 official matches in the new season.

Coach Ten Hag was appointed by Leverkusen in May to replace coach Xabi Alonso. The Dutch strategist signed a two-year contract with the German club. However, a poor start led to the former Manchester United coach being prematurely removed from his position at the 2024 Bundesliga champions.

Leverkusen lost to Hoffenheim in their opening home game, followed by a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen last weekend. Between these two Bundesliga matches, their only victory was in the first round of the German Cup against fourth-tier German side SG Sonnenhof.

The decision to dismiss the player was made by the club's shareholders' committee after consulting with the board of directors.

This past summer, Leverkusen experienced significant changes as a number of key players such as Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Amine Adli, Odilon Kossounou, Granit Xhaka, Lukas Hradecky, and Jonathan Tah all left the team.

To rebuild their squad, the club spent around 170 million euros to bring in Malik Tillman, Jarell Quansah, Eliesse Ben Seghir, Loïc Badé, Ibrahim Maza, Mark Flekken, and Ernest Poku.

Leverkusen's sporting director, Simon Rolfes, said: “This is a difficult decision. Nobody wanted this. But the past few weeks have shown that building a new team and succeeding with the current model is not feasible. We believe in the quality of the team and will do our best to move forward with a new arrangement.”

Ten Hag previously managed Manchester United from 2022 to 2024 before replacing Alonso, who moved to Real Madrid this summer. Under Alonso, Leverkusen enjoyed great success, winning the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season and finishing as runners-up last season.

However, Ten Hag's defensive style of play proved incompatible with a team accustomed to flamboyant attacking football. A source revealed to ESPN that Leverkusen's management wanted to act quickly before the situation worsened.

Following the draw against Bremen last weekend, the instability became even more apparent. Leverkusen lost their two-goal lead. Captain Robert Andrich couldn't hide his disappointment: “On the pitch, everyone was playing for themselves. Too many players were only thinking about themselves. I don't know if I've ever seen this at Leverkusen before. The final stages of the match really reflected our current situation.”

CEO Fernando Carro also admitted that the decision to part ways with Ten Hag was regrettable: “Parting ways with the coach so early in the season is painful, but we believe it was necessary. The club remains committed to its goals, and to achieve them, we need to create the best possible conditions for the entire team. Now is the time to thoroughly implement those conditions again.”
