Within the framework of the 2025 Festival "Intoxicated by Autumn", the activity of making green rice flakes at Hoang A Tuong Palace was recreated. This is an opportunity for everyone to not only enjoy but also directly participate in the process of making fragrant green rice flakes. Na Lo Green Rice has become a bridge, helping tourists and locals get closer together, sharing stories about traditional crafts, culture and life. Na Lo villagers grow local sticky rice to make green rice flakes.
The process of making green rice flakes of Na Lo people is actually very elaborate and meticulous. The rice is cleaned before being roasted on a wood stove. The flickering flame at the bottom of the pan not only cooks the rice grains, but also preserves the rustic, natural flavor. Roasting green rice with firewood requires experience to keep the fire steady, ensuring the green rice grains do not burn. After roasting, the rice is dried in front of a fan... ...and then put into the mill.
The green rice grains are still put into the stone mortar to be crushed, but still retain their characteristic and attractive aroma. Nowadays, machines have assisted in some stages, making the work less difficult for the people in Na Lo. The nimble, flexible hands of the Tay Na Lo women are sifting the green rice. This step not only requires dexterity but also a secret to ensure the green rice grains are clean, free of impurities and retain their bright green color.
After being made, the green rice flakes are carefully wrapped in a layer of green dong leaves, keeping the faint fragrance of the rice flakes mixed with the scent of the leaves. This is not only a traditional way of wrapping but also a unique charm of Na Lo green rice flakes. At 150,000 VND/kg, Na Lo green rice has become a specialty gift sought after by tourists. This is not only a business product but also the pride of Na Lo people when introducing the taste of their homeland to tourists from all over.
