VnExpressVnExpress27/04/2023

Winning home team Everton 4-1, Newcastle maintained third place with two points more than Man Utd after round 33 of the Premier League.

Against the home team in crisis in the second to last position, Newcastle maintained their high form to score four goals. Striker Callum Wilson scored twice, while Joelinton and Jacob Murphy also scored to help Newcastle move above Man Utd, solidify their position in the Top 4 and move closer to a first Champions League spot in 21 years.

Newcastle last played in the Champions League group stage in 2002-03 under Bobby Robson, when Alan Shearer was in charge. This season, manager Eddie Howe has brought balance to Newcastle, although the club with the richest owner in football has not yet splashed out on players. The three points at Everton are a testament to Newcastle's ambition, as they have won seven of their last eight games. They have also scored 10 goals in their last two games.

Midfielder Joelinton was the inspiration for the visitors' big win. In the 28th minute, Joelinton dribbled into the penalty area and shot hard, leaving goalkeeper Jordan Pickford unable to catch the ball. The ball fell out just as Wilson rushed in to cushion the ball, opening the scoring. In the 72nd minute, Joelinton himself headed home a goal from Joe Willock's cross.

Everton fell apart and conceded a third goal three minutes later, courtesy of a Wilson wonder goal. Receiving the ball just outside the box, the England striker curled the ball into the top corner, giving Pickford no chance. Wilson is on a run of form, with six goals in his last six games.

The hosts pulled one back through Dwight McNeil, but Newcastle continued to press for a fourth after an incredible piece of work by Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker picked up the ball on the left, dribbled past a number of Everton players before passing to the back post for Wilson to complete his double. The visitors surrounded Isak after the goal, in gratitude even though he didn't score.

Everton failed to win for the sixth consecutive game, leaving them second from bottom, two points adrift of safety. Before the game, the Goodison Park crowd filled the pitch with smoke and cheers. But the club's 69-season run in the top flight of English football is in danger of coming to an end.
