According to Reuters, in the early hours of June 2nd local time, Russia launched a large-scale airstrike targeting the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and other areas of Ukraine, using ballistic missiles and drones, amid repeated warnings from Kyiv about the risk of a large-scale attack.
The first explosions were recorded in Kyiv at around 1:30 a.m. (local time), just before air raid sirens sounded across the city.
About 45 minutes later, more explosions occurred, accompanied by localized power outages in some areas. Local authorities repeatedly urged residents to seek shelter.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Ukraine's air defense system was activated to intercept airborne targets. However, debris from missiles and drones still fell on many residential areas, causing fires, explosions, and property damage.
In Podil County, a nine-story apartment building was damaged after debris reportedly struck its roof. In Obolon County, several cars caught fire after being hit by missile debris.
Local officials also reported fires near a kindergarten, at a construction site, a gas station, and several commercial buildings in the capital.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said Russia used ballistic missiles in the attack.
The attack came after days of warnings from Ukraine about the possibility of Russia launching another large-scale airstrike.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously stated that intelligence agencies had detected signs that Moscow was preparing a large-scale attack, and urged citizens to pay particular attention to air defense warnings.
"Intelligence warnings about the risk of a Russian attack remain in effect. A major strike is possible, and they are preparing for it," Zelensky said in a message issued on the evening of June 1.
Russia had previously announced it would carry out "systematic" attacks on targets in Kyiv that Moscow considered to be linked to the Ukrainian military, as well as the country's decision-making centers. Russia also advised foreigners to leave the Ukrainian capital quickly.
