The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that Russian troops, along with border guards and other units of the Federal Security Service (FSB) , "threw a new attempt by Ukrainian authorities to carry out terrorist acts against civilians in the town of Shebekino."
Accordingly, at around 3:00 AM on June 1st (local time), two Ukrainian mechanized infantry companies, reinforced by tanks, attempted to advance into Russian territory near the Novaya Tavolzhanka settlement and the Shebekino border checkpoint.

However, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that three attacks by "Ukrainian terrorist groups" were repelled by Russian forces. Kyiv's units "suffered significant losses and were pushed back... Violations of national border sovereignty are unacceptable," the Russian Ministry of Defense said.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the infiltration attempt occurred after intense shelling of the area from the Ukrainian border.
The Russian Air Force carried out 11 airstrikes, while artillery conducted 77 firing missions targeting Ukrainian units as they advanced toward the Russian border.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also stated that more than 30 Ukrainian "terrorists" were killed, while four armored combat vehicles, a Grad multi-purpose missile launcher, and a pickup truck were destroyed.
Shebekino, located about 20km from the Russian-Ukrainian border, has been the target of increasingly intense attacks from the Ukrainian side this week. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said shelling in the area has injured eight people. He added that Kyiv's forces have been prevented from crossing the border.
The Russian regions of Belgorod, Bryansk, and Kursk all border Ukraine. These have been targets of drone and missile attacks by Ukrainian forces since the conflict began.
