From border trade to logistics
These days, at international border gates in An Giang province, trade is bustling. Trucks line up to complete customs procedures, while barges carrying agricultural products, construction materials, and consumer goods continuously arrive. The pace of goods circulation demonstrates the vitality of the Vietnam-Cambodia border trade route.
While previously cross-border trade primarily involved small-scale exchanges of goods between residents on both sides of the border, it has gradually shifted towards formal import and export channels with increasing participation from businesses. Along with the buying and selling of goods, services such as cold storage, bonded warehouses, transportation, and cross-border goods transshipment are also gradually developing.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade, in 2025, the total import and export turnover through border gates will reach nearly 1.3 billion USD, an increase of 8.2% compared to the same period. Of which, exports will reach 561 million USD, an increase of 38.8%; and imports will reach 718 million USD. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, the total import and export turnover through border gates will reach 329.5 million USD.
The above figures show that border trade is no longer limited to traditional buying and selling activities but is gradually shifting to a modern trading model, linked to regional supply chains. The implementation of the "one-stop shop" mechanism has contributed to shortening customs clearance time, reducing costs for businesses, and creating conditions for market expansion.
Following the administrative merger, An Giang has gained more favorable conditions for developing border trade. The province has over 148km of border with Cambodia and a system of seaports connecting to international shipping routes. The combination of border and maritime advantages is opening up the possibility of forming transshipment routes for goods between the Mekong Delta, Cambodia, and the Gulf of Thailand region.
According to Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong: "Trade relations between An Giang and localities in Cambodia have developed quite strongly in recent times. An Giang also invites Cambodian businesses to cooperate in building raw material areas, then bringing them to factories for deep processing to create joint branded products, and together conquer the international market."
According to Mr. Nguyen Thong Nhat, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, the province is focusing on developing border trade linked to logistics and goods transshipment. The locality prioritizes attracting investment in logistics centers, bonded warehouses, cold storage facilities, and promoting cross-border e-commerce. The Vinh Xuong, Tinh Bien, and Ha Tien international border gates have many favorable conditions to become important trading hubs in the Southwest region.
Expanding the economic space in border areas.
Along with the increase in import and export activities, the border area of An Giang is gradually expanding its development space. Border gates not only perform the function of customs clearance for goods but also become connecting points between domestic production areas and the Cambodian market and other ASEAN countries.
According to the province's development orientation, border trade in the coming period will be linked to digital transformation, e-commerce, and cross-border supply chain integration. The synchronized connection between border gates, road and waterway transport, and seaports is expected to create further impetus for economic growth in the border region.
However, to more effectively exploit its existing advantages, An Giang still has much work to do. Logistics infrastructure in some border areas is not yet synchronized, transportation costs remain high, and some connecting routes do not meet the increasing demand for goods circulation.
Mr. Bui Thai Hoang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Vinh Xuong commune, suggested that the province should soon invest in expanding National Highway 80B from Tan Chau to Vinh Xuong International Border Gate to improve the capacity for transporting goods between Vietnam and Cambodia. According to Mr. Hoang, when transportation infrastructure is invested in comprehensively, the advantages of the border gate will be more effectively utilized, creating further impetus for economic development in the border region.
Amidst expanding trade flows with Cambodia and ASEAN, An Giang is facing a great opportunity to leverage its role as an international trade gateway for the region. Once infrastructure and connectivity bottlenecks are removed, the border area will not only be a hub for goods trade but also become a new driving force for the province's development in the coming years.
