Despite being propagandized and reminded by the authorities, for immediate benefits, some people in the province still secretly use high-power electric shock machines to catch earthworms, causing ecological imbalance and reducing the quality of agricultural land. This behavior, if prolonged, will certainly leave many consequences in agricultural production and the environment. Therefore, relevant levels and sectors need to continue to propagate and strictly handle cases of intentional violations...

A person uses electric shock to catch earthworms. |
According to our research, people only need to invest in a high-power electric shock machine from China, costing from 5-6 million VND, to be able to catch earthworms in large quantities every day. This machine is compact, but when it makes a buzzing sound, large and small worms lying deep underground will have to come up, unconscious. The worm collector gently picks them up.
Currently, fresh earthworms are purchased at 40-60 thousand VND/kg; dried earthworms are sold at 700,000-900,000 VND/kg depending on size. With such high profits, some people in some localities in the province have ignored the law and secretly used electric shock to catch earthworms.
A person who catches earthworms using electric shock told us that he does not dare to openly operate but waits until dark or on a holiday to operate. To avoid being prosecuted by the authorities, the people who catch earthworms using electric shock usually go alone, operate for 1-2 days and then move to another area.
According to the representative of the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection: Earthworms play an extremely important role in agricultural production. They are likened to a biological plow for farmers, making the soil loose and porous, and are also an important link in the transformation of nutrients, creating conditions for the production of organic substances beneficial to plants, helping plants grow well.
In addition, catching earthworms with electric shock will not only damage earthworms but also other organisms in the soil, causing them to die or lose their ability to reproduce. Therefore, using high-power electric shock to catch worms will degrade the soil environment, negatively affecting agricultural production.
Electric shock devices with high power can also endanger the health and life of worm catchers, especially when it rains and the fields are flooded.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lang in Hung Vuong hamlet, Linh Son commune ( Thai Nguyen city), said: The situation of electrocuting earthworms has caused public outrage and left unpredictable consequences for production. My family specializes in growing vegetables and fruit trees, so we know the value of worms for soil improvement. When we discover someone coming to electrocute earthworms, we prohibit them and report them to the authorities.
According to current regulations, catching earthworms by electric shock violates Clause 2, Article 7, Law on Environmental Protection 2014 and Clause 25, Article 3, Law on Land 2013. Therefore, when detecting someone using electric shock to catch earthworms, people need to promptly report to the authorities to prevent and handle the situation.
To protect earthworms and maintain ecological balance, relevant agencies need to continue to promote awareness among the people; promptly and strictly handle those who harm the community for small personal profits.
