Attention to propaganda

The College of Tourism and Industry (Cam Giang) is a typical example of building a "Smoke-free school" model in the province. Every month, students in the school learn about the dangers of tobacco through extracurricular lessons. Not only that, the school also promotes communication on preventing the harmful effects of tobacco through fanpages and Zalo groups. On campus, billboards and slogans promoting the harmful effects of tobacco are also placed in easy-to-see locations. The school also includes strict implementation of the regulations on smoking ban in the criteria for evaluating students.

According to Mr. Vu Xuan Kien, Vice Principal of the College of Tourism and Industry, the school currently has nearly 2,000 students studying in 20 majors and training fields. Due to the nature of vocational training related to tourism and services, in addition to imparting knowledge, the school also focuses oneducation and training in skills and physical fitness.

Smoking not only directly affects the health of the user but also harms those around them, and is not suitable for those working in the service industry. Therefore, the school is determined to eliminate smoking as well as the sale and exchange of conventional cigarettes and new generation cigarettes in schools.

Nguyen Xuan Tung, a student at the College of Tourism and Industry, said: “Studying far from home, I sometimes feel a sense of absence. Seeing this, my friends also invite me to smoke to relieve my boredom. However, I firmly refuse and strictly follow the school's anti-smoking regulations. Participating in extracurricular classes, I understand more clearly the harmful effects of cigarettes, so in addition to proactively escaping the temptation of cigarettes, I am also an active propagandist to encourage relatives and friends to stay away from this constant danger.”

Extracurricular activities to promote the harmful effects of tobacco at Toan Thang Secondary School (Gia Loc) always create excitement for students. The activities are organized in a variety of ways, from quizzes to performances of skits about tobacco, attracting many students to participate and respond. In addition, all students, parents, leaders, teachers and staff of the school have signed a commitment to say no to tobacco. Therefore, for many years in a row, there has been no student smoking at the school. The male teachers are exemplary in complying with the regulation of not smoking on campus.

According to the school representative, middle school students are young, curious, and love to explore , so they are easily lured, enticed, and indulged in social evils, especially tobacco. Therefore, the school is very interested in education and propaganda to raise students' awareness and understanding of the harmful effects of tobacco.

Create a durable shield

Cigarettes, especially e-cigarettes, are still silently infiltrating and attacking students. The main reason is that this age group has not fully understood the dangers and does not have the courage to overcome the temptation of cigarettes. Therefore, schools must protect students from the worry of cigarettes.

Saying no to tobacco is one of the important contents that Dinh Van Ta Primary School (Hai Duong City) includes in the school's talks, thematic activities, and life skills training sessions. Determining that prevention is better than cure, the school wants students to be aware of the harmful effects of traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes early so that they can proactively "immunize" themselves against this danger.

Nguyen Tien Anh Duc, a 4A student at Dinh Van Ta Primary School, excitedly shared: “Thanks to the teachers' propaganda, I soon realized the harmful effects of cigarettes on human health. In my family, my grandfather smoked a lot, so I advised him to quit. I also asked my parents to hang the picture I drew with the message of staying away from cigarette smoke in the living room so that everyone would remember it.”

There are about 850 schools at all levels in the province. Through review, the Department of Health assessed that more than 60% of schools strictly implement regulations on banning smoking on school grounds. Building smoke-free schools has become a habit of many schools in the province. There has been no sociological survey on the rate of students using tobacco in the province. However, the reality of some students smoking has been recorded.

Master, Doctor Vu Thi Phuong, Deputy Head of the Examination Department (Hai Duong Lung Hospital) said: “Students are still not fully aware of the dangers of cigarettes. Most smoke out of curiosity, intrigue, and desire to show off. Therefore, families and schools need to accompany and stand side by side so that young people say no to cigarettes and avoid future consequences.”
