Hue has long been famous for its incredibly diverse system of public and private museums, which is considered an advantage not only for serving tourists but also for educating the younger generation, especially children. Initially, they may seem unfamiliar with these places, but once they get used to them, many children become enthusiastic about visiting museum spaces.
The Diem Phung Thi Art Center and the Le Ba Dang Art Center (part of the Hue Fine Arts Museum, located on Le Loi Street, Phu Nhuan Ward - now Thuan Hoa Ward) have become popular destinations attracting numerous domestic and international tourists. Among the crowds are many Hue children, brought by their parents to view the artworks and thematic exhibitions. While the adults are engrossed, the children are equally enthusiastic as they listen to the guides or their parents introduce each artwork and the fascinating stories associated with it.
Although she frequently travels along Le Loi Street, Nguyen Thuy Trang (Thuan Hoa Ward, Hue City) was surprised by the works and artifacts associated with the famous artist on her first visit to the Le Ba Dang Art Center with her child. For Ms. Trang, this is an interesting destination for her child to understand and learn more about culture and art right in the place where she lives.
"Not only I but also my children are fascinated. The more closely we look at the exhibits and read the explanations about the artists and their works, the more we understand the artistic and historical values of this exhibition space located right in the heart of Hue city, next to the romantic Perfume River," Ms. Trang added.
And so, as they walked around the museum, admiring the artworks, many children asked numerous questions that even their parents found perplexing. “From the meaning to the materials, the school, the style, and why it became world- famous. Besides asking the museum guides, I had to search online to answer my children's questions,” Ms. Trang added, saying that she had discovered many invaluable things that this space offered, and the most impressive was the reason why this renowned artist donated his works to Hue.
Not far away, the Diem Phung Thi Art Center is also exhibiting many works created by the children themselves. This is the result of a competition that helped the children understand and appreciate art even more, especially the style of the famous sculptor Diem Phung Thi.
Drawing inspiration from the late sculptor, the children have adapted their works with innocent yet contemplative feelings, with their pure and naive imaginations, exploring new materials and forms of expression that connect tradition and individual creativity. Each piece is not only whimsical and adorable but also reflects the unique perspective of the children.
Nam Phong (a student from Thuan Hoa ward) shared that this was a summer vacation activity that left a strong impression on him. It was an experience of visiting and thoroughly learning about the late artist's creative style, and then practicing by creating incredibly interesting artworks. Like Phong, many other children experienced the artistic atmosphere of a meaningful summer vacation by learning, playing, and experiencing life right in the museum in their hometown.
For many parents, taking their children to museums during the summer is also a way for them to relax their minds after stressful school hours and limit their exposure to digital devices. It's an opportunity for children to connect with the real world, connect with their parents, and learn more about their homeland's culture. Museums also help children develop their thinking skills through the artworks and artifacts.
Ms. Dinh Thi Hoai Trai, Director of the Hue Fine Arts Museum, said that in recent years, many parents in Hue have shown interest in bringing their children to the museum for experiential learning. Especially during the summer months, the number of children visiting increases significantly. The museum has also partnered with many schools and centers to bring children to this space. Here, in addition to sightseeing, children can also experience many activities related to culture and art, connected to the exhibited artifacts.
