The author claims that his fondness for the Heart Sutra didn't come about by chance. It was purely by chance that, after a serious illness, a friend lent him a copy of Thich Nhat Hanh's "The Understanding Heart." He read and pondered it for six years, and in late 2003, the book "Thinking from the Heart" was published. By 2020, it had been reprinted 15 times. He introduces and explains the Heart Sutra in the manner of a doctor, using concrete examples and easily understandable language, not metaphors, so that anyone can easily practice its teachings.
Mr. Tran Van Toan from Dak O commune, Bu Gia Map district, shared: “I had read the 'Heart Sutra' before but didn't understand anything. Luckily, when I read 'Thinking About the Heart' by Dr. Do Hong Ngoc, I understood. It's wonderful that someone took the time to research and explain it to me, making it very easy and pleasant to read. With a writing style based on real experiences, the author always thinks as if the reader is right in front of them, conversing with them. Perhaps this writing style makes me feel a closeness between the writer and the reader, sharing and exchanging ideas sincerely, without formality or distance.”
According to Dr. Do Hong Ngoc, in today's era, people are using their brains too much, to the point of "going crazy," which is why mental illnesses are increasingly prevalent. In a society where people are constantly rushing, always racing against time, youth, beauty, success, etc., stress is increasing. And the more uncertain, anxious, and stressful life becomes, the more suffering accumulates. And people not only experience pain, but also suffering, and while doctors can treat the pain, they cannot treat the suffering!
However, thanks to studying and practicing the Heart Sutra, Dr. Do Hong Ngoc has experienced positive changes in both his physical and mental health. He believes that peace of mind and body is essential in life, stemming from one's attitude and way of life. Don't wait for happiness; it will never come. Instead, recognize happiness in the present moment.
The author wrote this book to heal himself and also to provide a reference for his patients. The perspective on the Heart Sutra in "Thinking from the Heart" is that of both a physician and an artist. Through this, Dr. Do Hong Ngoc hopes to help readers not only heal physical pain but also alleviate the anxieties and losses of each individual.
Perhaps it's time to try listening to the voice of the heart. The heart isn't for thinking. The heart is for loving. When the heart thinks, it certainly doesn't think like the brain. The heart has its own way of thinking, which the brain often can't understand. |
