Premier League is too rich, opponents are poor

The Premier League surpassed the 1.2 billion euro spending mark in the 2025 summer transfer window while other leagues had to spend sparingly due to financial pressure.

The Premier League's €1.2bn spending has changed the structure of the transfer market.

According to statistics from Transfermarkt and Sky Sports , the 2025 summer transfer market will see the Premier League continue to dominate with a net spend (money spent on players minus money spent on player sales) far exceeding any other league (1.2 billion euros).

La Liga was the second biggest spender in Europe this summer, with a net spend of just €22m. Even the league’s big guns, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are under clear financial pressure and are considering selling players before buying.

Serie A recorded a surplus of 45 million euros from transfers. Competition with major leagues is making it difficult for Italian teams to retain talent and make purchases. Bundesliga, with a surplus of up to 148 million euros, continues to demonstrate a strategy of selling players instead of expensive purchases.

The sales of players like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong continue to show that the Bundesliga prioritizes financial balance and long-term investment. This disparity has sparked debate about the effectiveness of Financial Fair Play (FFP), with many arguing that the regulation is becoming a “joke” between the Premier League and the rest of Europe.

While Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga teams have to limit spending and adhere to strict financial regulations to maintain sustainability, the Premier League does not appear to be bound by the same restrictions.
