Besides Ly Hai and Tran Thanh, what else does the Vietnamese film market have?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên29/05/2024

Only 2-3 movies were big winners, 7 movies suffered huge losses.

In the past half year, there have been a total of 10 Vietnamese films released in theaters, including: Mai , Meet again the pregnant woman, Tra, Bright lights, The heiress 2, The price of happiness, B4S - Before love, Fragile flower, Flip side 7: A wish, Murder on the 4th floor.

Shown in theaters during the Lunar New Year 2024, Mai by director Tran Thanh earned more than 551 billion VND, leading the list of highest-grossing Vietnamese films in history; and Nhat Trung's "Meeting the Boss" luckily brought in 92.7 billion VND. Released on the occasion of April 30, "Lat mat 7" by Ly Hai has now reached over 451 billion VND. If only counting these 3 "winning" films, Vietnamese cinema in the past 5 months has collected over 1,094 billion VND, creating an extremely clear polarized picture at the box office when only a few films were big winners, the remaining 7 films suffered miserable losses.

The film The Price of Happiness by producer Xuan Lan and director Ngoc Lam grossed 26.3 billion VND, a loss of more than 24 billion VND compared to the announced investment of 37 billion VND because it had to share with the theater at the usual ratio of 5/5. The Heiress 2 by actress Trang Nhung and her husband, directed by Hoang Duy, sold 6 billion VND in tickets, while the investment capital was about 20 billion VND. Bright Lights , a film about old Cai Luong directed by Hoang Tuan Cuong, grossed 3.4 billion VND, and also in the same situation of unsold tickets was Tra Cua Le Hoang (screened for a few days during Tet) which earned 1.6 billion VND.

Tran Thanh's movie Mai

The movie B4S - Before the love hour directed by 3 new directors Tung Leo, Michael Thai, Huynh Anh Duy, was shown in mid-April and grossed 3.8 billion VND. The biggest loss was Doa hoa mong manh by Mai Thu Huyen when it only grossed over 430 million VND. Producer and director Mai Thu Huyen shared that the movie must earn hundreds of billions to break even because it was filmed entirely in the US. The thriller film An hom phat 4 by director Nguyen Huu Tuan, which has been shown since May 16, has grossed 1.9 billion VND and is about to leave theaters due to lack of customers.

Where are the other directors now?

A veteran producer (who asked to remain anonymous) shared his opinion: "Of course, everyone understands that Vietnamese cinema cannot and does not only have Tran Thanh and Ly Hai, and both of them cannot paint a colorful picture for Vietnamese cinema alone. Both of these billion-dollar directors are amateurs who have entered the film industry and are in a good time, although it cannot be denied that their skills have been honed and improved from previous films to later films, helping to produce better quality films, so they are more widely accepted by the audience. But Vietnamese cinema does not only have commercial films in the family psychological genre, but also needs and can develop historical, historical, action, fantasy films... with more diverse and rich content. Before Tran Thanh - Ly Hai, Vietnamese cinema had other popular directors, but where are they now, what films are they making, and how are their box office achievements? And the next generation of young directors, what conditions are they developing to make films?".

To answer the above questions, we can learn about the generation of directors who "made waves" and attracted audiences in Vietnamese theaters in the past. Charlie Nguyen was once famous for the films De Mai Tinh, Teo Em, Marry Now, Let's Get Married ... which had high revenue in the past, but now he has retired to production, teaching knowledge, and supporting young filmmakers. However, as he shared with Thanh Nien reporter: "I am still determined to make a film of stature for Vietnamese cinema with the genre of action - historical - historical films, not "laying down my gun", still actively looking for investors for a new action film with 2 scripts that both promote the spirit and spirit of the Vietnamese people, it could be Dong Mau Anh Hung 2 or an action film inspired by my grandfather, who was once known as Nhan Trang Ca Mau ".

Meanwhile, director Victor Vu, after box office phenomena with hundreds of billions in revenue such as Scandal Secret Carpet Red, Heroic Destiny, Bloody Heart, I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass, Blue Eyes ... is still working hard to make films, the latest being the film The Last Wife, which was released in November 2023 with a revenue of 97.6 billion VND. Victor Vu has just finished choosing scenes in the northern mountainous region, and will soon start filming a new horror film that is his forte. Victor Vu shared: "I am also focusing on a very good film script in the drama genre related to the Vietnam War, hoping to have a dedicated investor to accompany me, so that it can soon become a film as desired".

Vu Ngoc Dang, co-director of Bo Gia with Tran Thanh, which grossed 427 billion VND, had a successful opening for a real box office market in Vietnam in the early days with Nhung co gai chan dai , Hotboy noi luan, Dep tac centimeter ... and recently, Chi chi em em 2 mua tet 2023 earned 121 billion VND, Con Nhót mot chong shown on April 30, 2023 earned 76 billion VND. Currently, Vu Ngoc Dang is starting to make the film Co dau hao mon, which will be shown in theaters next October. Director Nguyen Quang Dung, after Dat rung phuong nam, which was shown in theaters in October 2023, earned 140 billion VND but encountered many public uproars, shared that he would temporarily stop making films for a while to look for new good scripts. Director Le Thanh Son of Em chua 18, which caused a stir before, is about to release a fantasy film about evil beasts called Mong cua, which will be shown in theaters next June.

The next generation of young directors such as Phan Gia Nhat Linh, Nhat Trung, Vo Thanh Hoa, Tran Huu Tan, Trinh Dinh Le Minh... with films released in recent years have also made more or less impressions on the public. They continue to make films and will soon have films released in theaters such as Ngay Xua Co Mot Chuyen Tinh (adapted from Nguyen Nhat Anh's story), horror film Con Cam (inspired by the fairy tale Tam Cam)... Young director Luu Thanh Luan, after his first horror film Quy Cau at the end of 2023, created a surprise with a revenue of 108 billion VND, is currently working on the horror film Linh Mieu which will be released in theaters this year... Vietnamese cinema is still waiting for new revenue breakthroughs.
