To travel from Hanoi to Ngoi Tu village (Vu Linh commune, Yen Binh district, Yen Bai province), visitors can use private cars, motorbikes, or buses. These are the most common and convenient modes of transportation. Ngoi Tu village is approximately 150-170km from Hanoi, depending on the route.

Ngoi Tu is located on the left side of the road, with a large sign at the beginning of the village. For most of the route, the roads are wide, except for a nearly 15km stretch connecting Thac Ba town to Ngoi Tu, which is relatively narrow. However, it's not too steep or winding, and traveling at an average speed shouldn't be a major problem.

In the village, there are more than 10 Dao families offering homestay services. Guests can contact them in advance or book upon arrival, as although there are guests year-round, the homestay system in Ngoi Tu is almost never overloaded. Guests can book communal rooms, which are Dao stilt houses, rent accommodation by the bed, or book private rooms, depending on their needs.

In Ngoi Tu, visitors can stroll through the village, admire the rural scenery of the northern mountainous region, and experience the daily life of the local people. Those who have been here say that it is essential to have a meal with the host family to enjoy the local cuisine and experience the customs and traditions of the White Dao ethnic group. If you prefer to cook yourself, you can go to the market to choose your own food and gain a better understanding of the local people's lives. If you're lucky, you might even buy bunches of black basil or small fish that the locals have just caught from Thac Ba Lake.

When we arrived, we bought over 1kg of fresh river catfish and some fresh bamboo shoots. The whole group decided not to cook the first meal but to give it to the host to contribute to the communal meal.

If it's the right season, visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy local produce such as grasshoppers, bee larvae, ant eggs, crickets, and various freshwater fish from Thac Ba Lake. People can eat and drink on stilt houses, or light a bonfire in the courtyard if the weather is chilly. Ngoi Tu village also has a performing arts troupe that performs traditional folk songs and dances.

Mr. Van Nam, owner of Vu Linh Homestay, said that he and other tourism service providers in Ngoi Tu have participated in training courses on serving tourists organized by the Yen Bai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Mr. Nam also went to Hanoi to learn how to cook some Western dishes to better serve foreign guests when they request it. "But generally, most guests prefer to enjoy local food and drinks," Mr. Nam said.

In Ngoi Tu, besides experiencing the local culture, visitors can also enjoy many outdoor activities such as camping by the lake, fishing, or renting a motorboat to explore the hydroelectric reservoir. This can be said to be a rather interesting destination for a weekend getaway.
