On July 2nd, Mr. Huynh Quang Huy, Head of the Fisheries Department of Binh Thuan province, informed that the locality is entering the peak season of the southern fishing season, the main seafood exploitation season of the year. However, the current catch is not as expected, with many fishing trips resulting in losses for fishermen.
According to some fishermen, for the past few months, boats have rarely encountered large schools of fish, mainly catching mackerel and anchovies, which are not very valuable and have low yields. While the cost of each fishing trip is very high and the value of the catch is low, many fishermen have temporarily moored their boats. In addition, adverse weather conditions have made fishing and seafood harvesting even more difficult. According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan province, the decline in marine fisheries resources is due to overfishing over a long period and the degradation of nearshore ecosystems.
To ensure the economic efficiency of fishing trips, the Binh Thuan Provincial Fisheries Department encourages owners of offshore fishing vessels to install post-harvest seafood preservation systems using polyurethane (PU) foam, and line fishing vessel holds with stainless steel to reduce losses and fetch higher prices for seafood. In addition, vessel owners should boldly utilize hydraulic winches, equip their vessels with sonar, radar, and long-range communication equipment to enhance fishing capacity. The Binh Thuan provincial fisheries sector also advises fishermen to fish in cooperative groups and teams, using the "mother ship - daughter ship" model to support each other in fishing; and to promote the implementation of fisheries logistics to reduce costs and increase labor efficiency.
