Man goes blind after being hit in the face by a pickleball.

Pickleball is a healthy sport if played correctly. However, even a seemingly harmless swing can have serious consequences for the eyes.

Typically, patient NVC (35 years old, Hanoi ) was admitted to the emergency room with particularly severe damage to his left eye, including: complete loss of light and dark perception, ruptured eyeball; iris and intraocular tissue prolapse; corneal and scleral tears; and severe inflammation and ulceration.

Due to irreversible damage, doctors were forced to surgically remove the eyeball. Specifically, the patient's left eye was permanently blind.

Another case involves patient NVH (39 years old, from Bac Giang) being admitted to the Central Eye Hospital with severe injury to his left eye after playing pickleball.

The patient suffered contusion of the eyeball, anterior chamber and vitreous hemorrhage, conjunctival congestion, mild corneal edema, and left eye vision limited to seeing only the outline of a hand at a distance of 0.1 meters.

The patient shared that during a game, a teammate hit the ball so hard that it veered off course and struck his left eye, causing intense pain and immediate blurred vision.

Dr. Tham Truong Khanh Van, Head of the Trauma Department at the Central Eye Hospital, assessed that patient H.'s left eye suffered severe vision impairment. After a period of medical treatment, vision improved, but intraocular pressure increased and could not be controlled.

Doctors were forced to recommend surgery to treat the traumatic glaucoma complication. However, after glaucoma-lowering surgery, the patient must continue long-term monitoring and treatment.

According to doctors at the Central Eye Hospital, the number of eye injuries related to pickleball is on the rise. The main causes are high-speed, spinny balls, short playing distances, insufficient reflexes, or racket collisions between players.

In addition, common injuries during play include: corneal abrasion; anterior chamber hemorrhage; ocular contusion; lens displacement or rupture; retinal detachment; eyeball rupture; temporary or permanent vision loss.

Based on the above case, doctors advise pickleball players to wear specialized protective eyewear; not to be careless with powerful shots or rebounds. Additionally, those with eye conditions, severe myopia, or previous eye surgery should consult a specialist and seek thorough advice before playing.

If a ball hits your eye, causing pain, redness, blurred vision, etc., you should immediately go to an ophthalmology clinic. Do not self-medicate with eye drops, apply heat, or try to treat it at home.
