Police received an emergency call and immediately responded to a house in Muscatine, a city located approximately 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Cedar Rapids. Upon entering the house, officers discovered the bodies of four victims who had been fatally shot.
In an official press conference held shortly afterward, Anthony Kies, the police chief of Muscatine, provided initial information on the progress in tracking down the perpetrator.
Accordingly, after deploying a large-scale search force, police officers quickly located the suspect's whereabouts as he was moving along a pedestrian walkway in the city. The suspect was identified as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52 years old, a resident of Muscatine.
The events surrounding the arrest of the perpetrator were extremely tense. Police Chief Anthony Kies stated that while officers were attempting to approach and engage in direct dialogue with Ryan Willis McFarland to persuade him to surrender his weapon, the man unexpectedly took his own life with the gun at the scene. The incident happened so quickly that the officers were unable to intervene in time.
Following the suspect's death, an expanded search of the crime scene and related areas led police to discover the bodies of two other men at two completely different locations within the same city of Muscatine. Of these two victims, one man was found dead in his home, while the other was discovered dead inside a local business establishment.
According to investigators, both victims were related to the perpetrator, McFarland.
To date, the official identities and details of all six unfortunate victims have not been publicly released by the authorities. This is to ensure the investigation process runs smoothly and to respect the privacy of the victims' families.
This particularly heinous family massacre has caused a profound psychological shock to the people in the region. Speaking to news agencies, Police Chief Anthony Kies emphasized that this was an act of extreme cruelty and that the trauma it has inflicted on the Muscatine community is irreparable.
The police are continuing their investigation to clarify the matter.
Police Chief Kies added that the suspect, Ryan Willis McFarland, has a prior criminal record, but he declined to share details regarding his past offenses.
