Functional foods, macrobiotics for cancer treatment
"After about 1 month of following a macrobiotic diet and using functional foods and drinking milk, I lost 10 kg and became exhausted. The colostomy wound due to colon cancer was ulcerated and did not heal," the male patient said about his health condition before he was transferred to the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Bach Mai Hospital ( Hanoi ).

According to the male patient, because he was worried that the tumor would grow strongly if he ate meat and maintained a normal diet, he applied macrobiotics; at the same time, he spent about 30 million VND to buy supplements and milk, which are products advertised to improve physical condition and strengthen immunity...
At the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, after treatment, the male patient recovered, gained weight, had a good appetite, and the ulcer dried and healed.
"Thanks to the doctors at Bach Mai Hospital who treated me and gave me dietary instructions, I have recovered. I eat well and no longer abstain from meat," the male patient shared.
"With cancer, the more you eat and the more you nourish, the more it nourishes the cancer cells, causing the tumor to grow. That is the wrong thinking of some cancer patients we have met," Associate Professor, Doctor, and Doctor Pham Cam Phuong, Director of the Center for Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Bach Mai Hospital, said on the sidelines of a seminar on nutrition for cancer patients held today, April 5.
According to information at the conference, over 85% of cancer patients lose weight or become malnourished during the course of their cancer; 50% of patients already have nutritional deficiencies when they are first diagnosed with cancer.
Malnutrition disrupts and reduces the effectiveness of treatment, increases complications and even causes death. It is estimated that 10-20% of cancer patients worldwide die from the consequences of malnutrition rather than from cancer. In Vietnam, the number may be higher.
Starving, cancer still grows and metastasizes
Faced with the reality of receiving some cancer patients who came to the hospital exhausted, only "skin and bones", after a period of nutrition with brown rice and sesame salt, Dr. Phuong noted: "If you do not eat, the tumor will continue to grow and still absorb nutrients from the body to grow and metastasize, not that fasting will stop the tumor".
"At Bach Mai Hospital, treating doctors always coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and nutritionists to help cancer patients receive the most effective treatment. Depending on the type of cancer and the stage of the disease, patients will receive specific nutritional recommendations and instructions from doctors. For example, it is necessary to abstain from foods containing iodine, and patients with thyroid cancer are treated with iodine 131," said Dr. Phuong.
"Cancer patients need to eat well to have good health, strong immune cells, and fight cancer. If they don't eat, the tumor will still take nutrients, causing the body to become exhausted and weak," Dr. Phuong noted.
