At its developer networking conference on Wednesday (September 27), Meta unveiled an AI assistant that can help users answer questions through links to Microsoft's Bing browser, as well as create AI images.

Users of Meta's platform will also be able to interact with 28 chatbots that take on characters played by celebrities who have given their consent to allow the use of their voices and appearances for this feature.
Meta announced that its AI assistants and character chatbots will launch in beta in the US starting Wednesday. “These are for entertainment and to help you connect with people around you, to help you accomplish things you want,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta.
Facebook's parent company also announced that developers will be able to build their own AI for use on Meta's messaging platform. A separate feature launching next year will allow those who can't write code to create their own bots.
Meta has laid off tens of thousands of employees, scaled back its real estate operations, and eliminated low-priority projects. With cost-cutting measures and a heightened focus on AI, Meta's stock price has more than tripled from its low point in November 2022.
