Giving is forever

Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong, born in 1966 in Hai Hung commune, former Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Thanh Mien district (formerly), has voluntarily donated blood 41 times. For Mr. Cuong, blood donation is not a spontaneous act, nor a temporary trend, but a long and continuous journey. From his youth, when he was a student at the Central Medical College I (formerly Hai Hung province), during his early days in the medical environment, witnessing cases of patients needing blood to fight for their lives, he quickly realized the special value of each drop of blood donated by volunteers.

From that first blood donation, the good habit gradually became a regular practice. For nearly 30 years, Mr. Cuong has maintained a regular blood donation routine, at least once a year, sometimes two or three times a year, each time donating 250 to 300 ml of whole blood. To date, the 41 blood donations are clear evidence of the perseverance, quiet dedication, and profound humanity of this Red Cross official.

Mr. Cuong's time working at Thanh Mien General Hospital left him with many profound memories. These included emergency shifts, witnessing accident victims and those suffering from severe blood loss in critical condition, where the line between life and death was measured in minutes and seconds. In such circumstances, blood was a "lifeline" for patients needing transfusions.

He remembers most vividly the case of a family in Tu Xa village, Doan Ket commune (formerly Thanh Mien district), where two members suffered from congenital thalassemia. Every year, they had to go to a higher-level hospital for blood transfusions 3 to 4 times to maintain their lives. For that family, every drop of blood received represented another chance to prolong life, another hope of continuing to support their loved ones. "Witnessing such situations, I think that as long as I'm healthy enough, I will continue to donate blood. When I'm no longer eligible, then I'll stop," Mr. Cuong shared simply.

It was these fragile lives that motivated him to remain committed to voluntary blood donation, not for titles or awards, but for the practical value of saving the lives of patients who need blood transfusions.

What is particularly commendable is that throughout his 41 blood donations, Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong has never experienced any adverse health reactions. On the contrary, he says that after each donation, he feels healthier and more energetic.

According to him, the concerns of some people about the harmful effects of voluntary blood donation are unfounded. “Healthcare facilities only accept blood from people who meet the health requirements. Screening is conducted very strictly to ensure the safety of blood donors. Blood donation not only saves lives but also benefits the donor themselves,” Mr. Cuong affirmed.

Based on his own practical experience, he always directly explains and shares information to dispel any hesitation in the community, especially among those donating blood for the first time.

Setting an example to spread the movement.

Not only is Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong an active blood donor, but he also plays a crucial role in developing the voluntary blood donation movement in his locality. Having served as Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Thanh Mien (formerly) district and as Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the District's Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign Steering Committee, he has always upheld a high sense of responsibility, effectively advising, organizing, and mobilizing efforts. According to him, while public awareness campaigns are necessary, the exemplary conduct of Red Cross officials is the key to creating lasting impact.

"When the leader, the person directly involved in blood donation campaigns, speaks, their words will be more persuasive," Mr. Cuong said.

Thanks to coordinated efforts and flexible approaches, the voluntary blood donation movement in Thanh Mien has achieved positive results for many years. Every year, the district's Red Cross Society is recognized by the former Hai Duong Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation as a model unit, receiving awards for its effective mobilization efforts that attract a large number of officials, union members, and citizens to participate.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong's enduring contributions to the voluntary blood donation movement have been recognized by various levels and sectors. In 2008, he was honored with a commemorative medal from the Ministry of Health for his contributions to humanitarian blood donation. In 2022, he was a delegate at the national blood donation awards ceremony.

In addition, he received numerous commendations and certificates of merit from the Provincial People's Committee, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation in Hai Duong Province (formerly), and related organizations. However, for Mr. Cuong, the greatest reward remains the joy of knowing that the blood he donated has contributed to saving the lives of patients.

Comrade Pham Van Hanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Hung commune, assessed that Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong's example of blood donation demonstrates a spirit of compassion and responsibility for the community, with a positive ripple effect. This noble act practically contributes to ensuring a blood supply for emergency care and treatment, while also encouraging cadres, Party members, and the people to actively participate in humanitarian and charitable activities. This is a typical example that needs to be publicized and replicated, contributing to promoting the voluntary blood donation movement and humanitarian and charitable work in the area.

The Red Cross official always keeps in mind: "Every drop of blood donated saves a life." And for Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong, this journey of "sharing precious blood" is not only a story of compassion, but also a vivid testament to civic responsibility and a spirit of community service that has been nurtured persistently over the years.
