Ensuring progress
With college and university students about to enter a long holiday, the number of regular blood donors tends to decrease sharply, leading to a serious risk of blood shortages in hospitals.
Determined to ensure sufficient blood supplies during the summer, localities throughout the city are simultaneously organizing voluntary blood donation drives.
In early May, more than 300 officials, volunteers, youth union members, and residents in Lai Khe commune participated in the 2026 Voluntary Blood Donation Day, collecting 269 units of blood. This contributed to supplementing the safe and timely blood supply for emergency care and treatment of patients. The event not only spread the compassionate message "Donate blood to save lives – a noble act" but also further affirmed the spirit and responsibility for the community.
Not only civil servants, public employees, and workers, but also young people returning to their localities after completing their military service are encouraged to participate in the voluntary blood donation movement. Mr. Pham Van Duc (Thuy Nguyen ward) shared: Before fulfilling his duty in the People's Police, Mr. Duc had donated blood a few times. After completing his service and returning to his hometown, Mr. Duc has participated in blood donation more regularly and consistently.
To date, Mr. Duc has donated blood nearly 20 times and has become a member of the Hoa Phuong Blood Donation Volunteer Club. Understanding that blood reserves are in high demand this summer, Mr. Duc continues to encourage officers and soldiers in his unit to participate in blood donation.
The process of receiving, preserving, and classifying donated blood has also been meticulously prepared. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien, Deputy Director of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center (Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital), stated that in preparation for the summer voluntary blood donation campaign, the Center has proactively secured human resources and mobilized material resources, ready to connect and support localities in developing a scientifically sound and reasonable schedule for organizing blood donation events during the summer. The Center ensures proper counseling, screening, and safety before and during blood collection, and provides health counseling and care to registered blood donors according to professional procedures.

Proactive and flexible
Schools and many localities have detailed plans and specific roadmaps to participate and contribute to the campaign. In 2026, Hai Duong Central College of Pharmacy is tasked with mobilizing approximately 1,000 units of blood, with blood donation drives expected to be organized in May and September.
However, according to Comrade Bui Xuan Khoa, Vice Principal of Hai Duong Central College of Pharmacy, in order for the blood donation event to truly spread widely among staff, faculty, and students, from the beginning of the year, the school's Trade Union and Youth Union have intensified propaganda work, raising awareness about the purpose and humanitarian significance of voluntary blood donation. This has fostered a sense of responsibility and sharing for the community among students.
Since the beginning of February, Hai Duong Central College of Pharmacy has organized a blood donation day, attracting approximately 150 staff, teachers, and students to register for blood donation and receiving nearly 100 units of blood, contributing to supplementing the blood reserve for emergency and treatment purposes for patients. From this event, the school gained more experience in communication and choosing more effective times for blood donation campaigns in subsequent years, such as before student graduation, when new students enroll, etc.
Striving to affirm the core and pioneering role of the blood donation movement in the locality, Ms. Dao Thi Ngoan, President of the Red Cross Society of Nam Thanh Mien commune, said: This year, the commune has been assigned a target of mobilizing donations of about 300 units of blood. It is expected that on May 28th, the commune's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation and the commune's Red Cross Society will coordinate with the National Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital to organize the blood donation drive. Currently, about 200 people have registered to participate.
In addition, the commune's Red Cross Society also plans to organize another blood donation event in September or October this year. Activities honoring blood donors and commending exemplary blood-donating families are also prioritized and valued by the commune's Red Cross Society.

To spread the meaning of the Summer Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign, the active participation of young people and volunteers is indispensable. Pham Tuan Vu, Head of the Eastern Region Youth Blood Donation Mobilization Club, said: With 200 core members, this summer, the club's youth will actively coordinate with officials and youth union members to communicate about voluntary blood donation on the fanpage, the electronic information portal, and through direct outreach in residential areas… to gradually change people's perceptions of voluntary blood donation, contributing to increasing the rate of blood donation participation in the community.
On the other hand, the Club also plans to coordinate and support local authorities in organizing blood donation events, such as in Tan Hung ward (May 31st); and is expected to launch blood donation campaigns in Gia Loc commune, Nam Sach commune, etc., in June.
With flexible and appropriate implementation methods and the mobilization of participation from various units and organizations, the 2026 Summer Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign in the city is expected to meet or exceed the set targets.
In 2026, Hai Phong was assigned a target of mobilizing and receiving 63,500 units of blood. According to the City's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, as of May 16th, the entire city had received approximately 33,000 units of blood.
During the summer voluntary blood donation campaign, the City's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation aims to continue promoting, mobilizing, and receiving more than 19,000 units of blood, striving to complete 30% of the blood donation plan for the whole year of 2026.
