With only weeks left before the 2026 World Cup kicks off, the three co-hosting nations – the United States, Mexico, and Canada – have agreed to implement Ebola-related public health measures for people arriving from high-risk areas in Africa.

This move aims to minimize the risk of disease transmission during the tournament.

In a joint statement, the three governments affirmed that the health and safety of citizens and visitors are their top priority as North America prepares to welcome millions of fans from around the world . However, they did not disclose the full details of the coordination mechanism between the three countries.

The new measures were introduced after the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in Congo a global public health emergency. The WHO warned that the risk of the disease spreading to neighboring countries in Central Africa was high.

The US has taken the strongest action. Washington has already banned entry to non-US citizens who have visited Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan in recent weeks. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) then expanded the ban to include permanent residents who have stayed in these countries within 21 days prior to entry.

In Canada, the government imposed a 90-day entry ban on citizens from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. Additionally, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and foreigners who have been in affected areas but are asymptomatic will be required to self-isolate for 21 days starting May 30th.

Meanwhile, Mexico opted for an approach focused on health surveillance at border crossings. Health Minister David Kershenovich said the country would step up Ebola screening at airports, advise citizens to avoid travel to Congo, and require those arriving from that country to quarantine for 21 days.
