Meta recently sparked global controversy by removing end-to-end encryption on Instagram in May 2026, raising renewed concerns about the privacy and security of popular messaging apps. This move reminded many of the WhatsApp class-action lawsuit in the US in early 2026, where the Meta-owned platform was accused of potentially allowing internal personnel to access portion of chat content in special circumstances. Not only in the tech industry, but many famous figures such as Elon Musk and Pavel Durov have also repeatedly spoken out to warn about the risks of personal data on modern messaging platforms.
While the international community is fiercely debating end-to-end encryption and data security, the majority of Vietnamese users still seem unconcerned about how billions of personal messages are stored and processed every day. According to numerous market reports, Zalo remains the most popular communication platform in Vietnam with approximately 79 million active users and processing over 2 billion messages daily, surpassing even Messenger and TikTok in terms of presence in daily life. The worrying thing is that messaging apps are no longer just for storing a few ordinary chat messages; they've become places to store users' ID photos, bank statements, work documents, personal passwords, and even travel itineraries. Cybersecurity experts warn that when personal data is leaked, cybercriminals can combine AI and deepfakes to create highly realistic scams involving impersonating relatives, superiors, or even blackmail videos . Meta's recent change in privacy policy once again demonstrates that technology platforms' commitments to privacy can change at any time, and in the era of booming AI, proactively protecting personal data is becoming a vital survival skill for all internet users.
