Continuing to preserve and promote traditional Cheo, in 2025, Hanoi Cheo Theater will restore the ancient Cheo play "Trinh Nguyen".
The ancient Cheo play “Trinh Nguyen” was edited and compiled by People’s Artist Tran Quoc Chiem and Meritorious Artist Doan Dinh Vinh. Choreographer: Meritorious Artist Hoai Anh. Traditional singing instructor: People’s Artist Minh Thu. Director: People’s Artist Tran Quoc Chiem. Assistant director: Meritorious Artist Ngoc Anh. Music: Artist Hung Cuong. Art design: Dang Minh Tuan. Art direction: People’s Artist Thu Huyen.
Performed by a group of actors, actresses and musicians from the Hanoi Cheo Theater.
“Trinh Nguyen” is considered one of the seven typical and standard ancient Cheo plays of the Vietnamese Cheo stage. These are: Truong Vien, Kim Nham, Luu Binh – Duong Le, Quan Am Thi Kinh, Tu Thuc meets Tien and Trinh Nguyen.
“Trinh Nguyen” is a play about a woman named Trinh Nguyen. She married a widower named Ton Dan, from Vinh Bao, Hai Phong . After her husband died, she raised her own child and her husband’s stepchild alone. Unfortunately, two young men, out of compassion, buried a person who was killed on the street, so they were wrongly accused of murder, and one of them had to die to atone for his crime. Trinh Nguyen chose death for her own child, keeping her husband’s stepchild because she thought he was already disadvantaged because he lost his mother early.
Before Trinh Nguyen's noble actions, along with a thorough investigation of the case, the Judge exonerated the two boys and helped them reunite with their mother.
Cheo plays are very attractive to viewers when they depict the image of virtuous women, sacred motherly love and the strictness and fairness of the law.
With the long tradition of a Theater, hopefully the play "Trinh Nguyen" will once again affirm the success and position of Hanoi Cheo in the Vietnamese Cheo village.
