Loving homes
The laughter of Nguyen Tue Lam, a student in class 1A7 at Ngoc Son Primary School (Phu Lien ward), was even more joyful this Children's Day. After many years living in a cramped, dilapidated house, her family is now celebrating a great joy as they move into a spacious and sturdy new home.
With his father working as a laborer and his mother in poor health and lacking stable employment, Lam's family faced hardship. Understanding their situation, the Youth Union of Phu Lien Ward stepped in to connect with and mobilize resources to support the family in building a "Red Scarf" house.
After more than two months of construction, the 30-square-meter house was completed and put into use at a total cost of over 150 million VND. According to Pham Phuong Anh, Secretary of the Youth Union of the ward, the funding was mobilized from many organizations, units, and philanthropists, demonstrating a spirit of sharing and responsibility towards children in difficult circumstances.
Of that amount, the Youth Union of the Department of Construction contributed 40 million VND. The Fundraising Committee for the "For the Poor" Fund of Phu Lien Ward also contributed 40 million VND.
What is particularly commendable is that the school where Lam studies also joined hands in contributing with the affection and sharing of teachers and students. Specifically, Ngoc Son Primary School contributed 5 million VND, and the entire class 1A7 contributed 15 million VND.
At the inauguration ceremony, representatives of the local government and various organizations presented gifts and encouraged the family to continue overcoming difficulties and taking care of their child's education and upbringing. For Lam, the house is a meaningful gift, opening up new hopes for the future.
Earlier in March, the An Bien Ward Youth Union, in coordination with other units, started the construction of a "Red Scarf" house for the family of two brothers, Bui Bao Long and Bui Bao Nam, at house number 5H/26/17 Khuc Thua Du Street. The two brothers are students at Vinh Niem Secondary School and Vinh Niem Primary School, and live with their parents in a severely dilapidated house.
The Youth Union of An Bien ward mobilized the support and contributions of the City's Young Entrepreneurs Football Club, Vinh Niem Secondary School, Vinh Niem Primary School, the Youth Union of Tran Nguyen Han High School, and many other benevolent groups and individuals to rebuild the house for the two children. The total amount of support provided exceeded 211.5 million VND.
Also in August 2025, the Youth Union of An Bien ward, in coordination with the Ward Military Command, handed over a "Red Scarf" house to the family of Nguyen Thu Phuong, a student at Vinh Niem Secondary School.
After nearly three months of construction, the two-story house, spanning 45 square meters, was completed at a total cost of 450 million VND. The Youth Union of the ward, along with other organizations and individuals, raised 235 million VND and 5 tons of cement.

Joining hands to help underprivileged students realize their dreams.
To sustain and spread the "Red Scarf" house-building movement, many localities have proactively sought creative and flexible ways to mobilize social resources.
As one of the units actively implementing the program, the Secretary of the An Bien Ward Youth Union, Ha Thi Minh Chau, said that each completed "Red Scarf" house is the result of the community's collective efforts. In this effort, the Youth Union plays a connecting role, mobilizing the support of businesses, schools, social organizations, and philanthropists.
According to Ms. Chau, mobilizing resources to build and repair houses for disadvantaged students is not simple. However, the Youth Union of the ward always strives to maintain support, aiming to complete at least one "Red Scarf" house project each year. Each completed house not only provides stable housing for the students but also instills confidence and motivation in their families to improve their lives.
In Gia Vien ward, the effectiveness of inter-agency coordination is demonstrated through the "Red Scarf House - House of Love and Compassion" project for Nguyen Thi Huyen Vi, a student at Chu Van An Secondary School. To implement the project, the ward's Youth Union proposed that the Hai Phong City Youth Union mobilize support of 50 million VND; the ward's Women's Union mobilized an additional 10 million VND from its members and social contributions.
After more than three months of construction with the participation of youth union members, neighborhood committees, schools, and local people, the house has been renovated to be more spacious, clean, and beautiful, helping Huyen Vi's family to stabilize their lives and focus on their studies.
From the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year until now, the Youth Union and Children's Union branches throughout the city have mobilized resources to build and repair 15 "Red Scarf" houses. These projects not only provide safe homes for students from disadvantaged backgrounds but also give them strength to continue their studies.
The leaders of the City Youth Council affirmed that the value of the "Red Scarf" houses lies not only in their material aspects but also in their profound spiritual significance, demonstrating the community's sharing with disadvantaged students.
Given the continued high demand for support and the ongoing difficulties in mobilizing social resources, the City Youth Union and the City Children's Council will continue to review and identify cases requiring assistance, while strengthening connections with businesses, organizations, and philanthropists. This is to ensure that no student has to drop out of school due to difficult circumstances, and that the "Red Scarf" shelters continue to be a support system for their dreams.
