Thái LanDr. Ngo Thi Thuy Huong and her colleagues at Phenikaa University were awarded the King of Thailand Awards for their work on plant treatment technology with vetiver to reduce dioxins in contaminated soil.
The King of Thailand Vetiver Award 2023 (King of Thailand Award) honors 6 outstanding research works on vetiver, taking place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on May 29.
Dr. Ngo Thi Thuy Huong and her collaborators including Nguyen Quoc Dinh, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao and Vu Thi Lan Anh, won the Excellent Research Award in the category of non-agricultural applications, with their work. “Using Vetiver Plant Treatment Technology” to reduce dioxin in contaminated soil at Bien Hoa Airport, Dong Nai, Vietnam”.
Research to evaluate the ability of vetiver to treat pollution and stabilize plants for dioxin-contaminated soil on a field scale at Bien Hoa airport, one of the most heavily dioxin-contaminated areas in Vietnam.
Vetiver grass is known to prevent erosion, conserve soil and water resources, and reduce pollution. This is the first time research has shown that vetiver grass is used to treat dioxin contaminated soil with plants, thereby opening up opportunities for application to clean persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in soil and water.
According to information from the Vetiver Network, each winning work will receive $2.500 with a certificate, presented by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, patron of the Vetiver Network (TVNI), on behalf of the King. The awardees also presented and shared their research at the International Vetiver Conference.
Dr. Ngo Thi Thuy Huong is currently a lecturer and leader of the research group on Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology at Phenikaa University. As an expert in ecological toxicology and environmental health, she leads many national and international projects on water environment, ecological toxicology, environmental management, natural resources, phytoremediation and microplastic pollution. Recently, Dr. Huong's researches have extended to the areas of metal differentiation and bioavailability in the aquatic environment, as well as microplastic pollution and their effects on ecosystems and human health.
King of Thailand Vetiver Award 2023, within the framework of the 7th International Conference on Vetiver, taking place from May 29 to June 5. This is the third time Thailand has hosted the event, with the theme "Vetiver in soil and water conservation", attracting the participation of scientists and researchers from more than 1 countries.
The International Vetiver Conference is a scientific event focusing on the various applications of the vetiver system, held every 4 years (or 5 years). The event was first held in 1996 in Thailand and expanded to other countries under the control of the International Vetiver Network and the Chaipattana Foundation.
The international conference on vetiver has been held 6 times, in Chiang Rai - Thailand (1996), Petchaburi - Thailand (2000), Guangzhou - China (2003), Caracas - Venezuela (2006), Lucknow - India (2011), and Da Nang - Vietnam (2015). The conference is an opportunity for experts and scientists to summarize the effectiveness of application and preeminent features of vetiver grass, to soon replicate the applications of vetiver technology in the prevention of erosion and landslides, limit environmental pollution and promote the economic efficiency of this grass.
