According to the Japan Times , the Japanese government has decided to increase visa fees for foreign nationals by amending a related cabinet decree. The decision was approved at a cabinet meeting on June 19, marking the first time Japan has adjusted visa fees since 1978.
According to the new regulations, the new fees apply to applications submitted from July 1st.
- The fee for a single-entry visa will increase from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen (approximately $104 USD , or 2.5 million VND).
- The fee for a multiple-entry visa has increased from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen (approximately $208 USD , or 4.9 million VND).
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the current fee, established in 1978, is no longer appropriate given the current economic climate. "We have adjusted the fee to reflect inflation and exchange rate fluctuations over the past nearly half-century," he said at a press conference on June 19.
According to the Minister, the government carefully considered the decision before making it, and anticipates that it will not have an immediate impact on the number of international visitors to Japan.

According to the Japanese government, the additional revenue from the fee increase will be used to cover the processing costs for the rapidly growing foreign community. This new revenue will also be used to expand Japanese language training programs and strengthen measures to address overstay issues.
Japan argues that raising fees is necessary to bring visa and residency-related costs closer to those of Western countries, thereby building a more efficient immigration management system.
According to data released on June 17th by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), Japan received approximately 3.56 million international visitors in May, a decrease of 3.6% compared to the same period last year. Thus, in the first five months of the year, Japan received approximately 17.94 million international visitors, a slight decrease of 1.1% compared to the same period in 2025.

Vietnam recorded approximately 58,000 visitors to Japan in May, a decrease of 2.1% compared to the same period last year. However, for the first five months of the year, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached approximately 340,000, an increase of 9.1% compared to the same period last year.
According to JNTO, the new Hanoi-Shizuoka route, launched in April, has contributed to supporting the demand for Japanese tourism among Vietnamese visitors. However, the reduction in flights by some airlines, along with the increasing appeal of Chinese tours, has affected the number of tourists in May.
