According to Reuters, on September 16 (local time), Meta technology group - owner of a series of leading social networks in the world such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp announced to ban Russia Today (RT), Rossiya Segodnya and other Russian state media networks from platforms owned by Meta.
"After careful consideration, we have decided to expand our current policies regarding Russian state media," the group said in a statement.
Rossiya Segodnya, RT and others will be banned from our apps globally for foreign interference."
Meta said the ban will be implemented in the next few days and will apply to all applications owned by the company such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads...
The ban marks a significant escalation of tensions between the world's largest social media company and Russian state media.
For years, tensions between Meta and the above organizations have been simmering as the company has taken a number of measures to limit the ability of Russian media to operate, such as blocking the use of advertising, preventing their posts from reaching users...
Meta's ban comes as Washington has charged two RT employees with money laundering.
The two are suspected of conspiring to hire an American company to produce content that would skew public opinion about the 2024 US presidential election.
On September 13, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on countries around the world to consider RT's activities as covert intelligence operations.
In contrast, RT regularly criticizes US actions and accuses Washington of trying to prevent the station from conducting journalistic activities.
