According to Reuters, on September 16 (local time), the technology giant Meta, owner of leading social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced it was banning Russia Today (RT), Rossiya Segodnya, and other Russian state-owned media networks from its platforms.
The company's statement said: "After careful consideration, we have decided to expand our current policies toward Russian state media outlets."
Rossiya Segodnya, RT, and other organizations will be banned from our applications globally for engaging in foreign interference (internal national affairs).
Meta stated that the ban will be implemented in the coming days and will apply to all applications owned by the company, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads, and others.
The ban marks a significant escalation of tensions between the world's largest social media company and Russian state media.
Over the years, tensions have simmered between Meta and these organizations as the company implemented measures to restrict the operations of Russian news outlets, such as blocking advertising and preventing their posts from reaching users.
Meta's ban comes amid Washington's recent accusations of money laundering against two RT employees.
These two individuals are suspected of conspiring to hire an American company to produce content aimed at influencing public opinion regarding the 2024 US presidential election.
On September 13, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on countries around the world to view RT's activities as covert espionage.
Conversely, RT frequently criticizes US actions and accuses Washington of trying to prevent the station from carrying out its journalistic work.
