With many university admission opportunities, candidates need to choose wisely.

In recent years, universities have diversified their admission methods to recruit suitable candidates and increase opportunities for students to enter university. However, alongside this positive aspect, candidates also need to make careful choices to select the right school.

Candidates need to make careful choices to ensure they can truly study the field and that the school provides adequate teaching facilities.

Many opportunities

Early admission methods include: reviewing academic transcripts, reviewing aptitude test scores, and selecting students who excelled in one of the three years (grades 10, 11, or 12).

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) over the years, the percentage of students admitted through this method is second only to those admitted based on high school graduation exam scores. In 2022, this rate was nearly 40%, and in 2023 it was 30.24%, not including methods combining academic transcripts and other criteria. It has been noted that, to date, approximately 200 universities have announced the use of this method for admissions, with most using scores from 2-6 semesters.

Regarding the 2024 admissions regulations, candidates will only register their preferences for specific majors/schools, without needing to register preferences based on admission methods or subject combinations. Students must remember to update all relevant data on the Ministry of Education and Training 's admissions system, such as academic transcripts, foreign language certificates, competency assessment certificates, and other certificates for priority and incentive points as stipulated by the Ministry of Education and Training's regulations.

Top universities like the Foreign Trade University, the Banking Academy, and the Ho Chi Minh City University of Law... require applicants to meet additional criteria besides their academic transcripts, such as having won academic awards, international certificates, or being a student from a specialized school. Schools/majors focusing on sports and arts often combine academic transcript scores with aptitude test scores.

The University of Transport and Communications has just announced the minimum admission scores for early admission based on a thinking skills assessment test and the requirements for admission based on high school transcripts.

Specifically, according to the results of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's aptitude test, the score is 50 points out of 100. For admission based on high school transcripts, candidates who have graduated from high school or will graduate from high school in 2024 can use the total score of three high school subjects in a chosen subject combination to submit their application. At the same time, the average annual score (considered for each year) of the three subjects in that combination must not have any subject below 5.5 points.

For the combined admission method, candidates need an IELTS English certificate with a score of 5.0 or higher (valid until August 12, 2024). This will be combined with the academic transcript scores of two subjects in the admission combination, including Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry/Literature. The total score for the two subjects must be 15 points or higher.

In 2024, for the first time, military schools (except for the Military Technical Academy and the Military Medical Academy) will recruit students based on academic transcripts, accounting for approximately 10% of their enrollment quota. Candidates need to have an average GPA of 7 or higher each year, with a minimum score of 7.5 in the subjects included in the admission test. In addition, many candidates have also taken aptitude tests organized by the two National Universities and the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's thinking skills assessment test at this time.

The University of Transport Technology has officially announced the cutoff scores for early admission based on a combined academic transcript review method. The cutoff scores for this combined method range from 18 to 26 points.

The Vietnam Women's Academy has announced the first round of admission scores based on academic transcripts. Accordingly, the admission scores based on academic transcripts range from 19 to 25.5 points. For the method combining academic transcripts with international English certificates, the admission scores range from 22 to 25 points.

Candidates applying based on academic transcripts with lower scores

In 2023, universities used up to 20 admission methods. However, considering high school graduation exam scores and academic transcripts were the two main methods, accounting for the overwhelming majority of successful candidates. Specifically, admission based on high school graduation exam scores accounted for 49.45%, and academic transcripts for 30.24%.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) analyzed the results of the high school graduation exam for two groups of candidates admitted to universities: those admitted based on academic transcripts and those admitted based on high school graduation exam scores. The results showed that 60% of candidates admitted based on academic transcripts had a total high school graduation exam score of approximately 20 points across three subjects. Meanwhile, 60% of candidates admitted based on high school graduation exam scores had a total score of over 23 points across three subjects.

The results of the 2023 high school graduation exam were provided by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, stated that high school graduation exam scores have the potential to better differentiate candidates when applying to universities. We recommend that when using the academic transcript-based admission method, an additional entry threshold based on high school graduation exam results should be used to increase fairness among different groups of candidates.

In fact, during the previous admissions season, some universities initially set a target of 100 places but increased it to 200 for early admissions. Ultimately, the university only admitted 100 students who applied through the early admissions process. This left no places available for other admission methods.

Regarding this issue, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son stated that early admissions, if intended for direct admission, would be very good if highly talented or gifted students could be accepted freely by universities without worrying about quotas. However, if quotas are not controlled, it will lead to unfairness.

It is known that many universities are strict in their early admissions process, but some universities are admitting students regardless. They not only exceed their enrollment quotas but also far exceed their training capacity.

Based on this reality, candidates need to make a careful choice to select a truly high-quality university, rather than simply "getting into university".
