In 2024, the performing arts sector achieved many outstanding successes, including some enviable records. All 12 theaters under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism completed their 2024 plans by the beginning of December. The Vietnam Puppet Theatre is currently operating actively with over 1,000 performances, a record number in the theatre's history. The Youth Theatre also made its mark by continuously launching new programs for young people. In 2024, the theatre staged four new plays as part of the "Summer of Love 2024" project and adjusted performance times to 8 PM on Saturdays and 3 PM on Sundays, making it easier for parents and young audiences to schedule time to enjoy the arts.

In a field that seems to have the most niche audience today, in 2024, the Vietnam Traditional Opera Theatre sold 350 tickets per performance at the Hong Ha Theatre. Although it was done in collaboration with an event organizing company, this was a significant turning point after many years of traditional opera returning to the ticket-selling format. Many audience members were surprised and delighted to enjoy unique, traditional opera performances right in the heart of the capital city.

The Vietnam Circus Federation, the Youth Theatre, the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra, and the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre are not only active domestically but also have many successful international collaborations. In 2024 alone, the Vietnam Puppet Theatre performed in the United States, Japan three times, and Taiwan once. The Vietnam Circus Federation's four-woman conical hat act won a Silver Medal at the 8th International Circus Festival "IDOL" held in Russia, marking the first time Vietnamese circus has been honored in a leading country in the art of circus.

In 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism organized the first International Jazz Festival – Nha Trang 2024. This was the first time a jazz festival was held in Vietnam, marking a significant event in the country's musical life. The program brought together more than 100 renowned jazz artists and bands from Vietnam, the United States, Singapore, and South Korea. The artists presented impressive performances in a diverse range of genres, from Classic and Bossa Nova to Jazz Funk and World Music. The program received high praise from both professionals and the general public. This cultural event is of significant importance, contributing to promoting the image of Khanh Hoa tourism to international friends. The success of the festival is a prime example of its contribution to the success of the performing arts industry in the past year.

Contributing to the vibrant landscape of performing arts last year were two television programs, "Brother Says Hi" and "Brother Overcomes a Thousand Obstacles," which achieved record-breaking numbers and created a "bright spot" for the performing arts industry. The frenzy for concert tickets for "Brother Overcomes a Thousand Obstacles" and "Brother Says Hi" caused a social media frenzy. Tickets sold out for both shows. The ticket sales system for "Brother Overcomes a Thousand Obstacles" even crashed within minutes of going on sale.

Experts believe that the explosion of the two programs "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" and "Brother Says Hi" are major boosts, "breaking the ice" in the domestic performing arts industry, becoming a big surprise for those working in the performing arts and music industries this year. This is a prerequisite for the development of cultural industries, including the performing arts industry in Vietnam.

Improving the NTBD policy system

According to the report by the Director of the Department of Performing Arts, People's Artist Xuan Bac, at the Conference summarizing the tasks of the Performing Arts sector in 2024, the sector made efforts to fulfill assigned tasks; closely coordinated with the Departments of Culture and Sports, Departments of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and specialized Literature and Arts Associations from the central to local levels to effectively strengthen state management; state management of performing arts and literature activities has gradually become more orderly, not only enriching the spiritual and cultural life of the people, but also providing practical and effective support in the socio-economic recovery of the country, promoting the building of a healthy cultural environment; art units from the central to local levels, and enterprises with the function of organizing art performances nationwide strictly implemented Government Decree No. 144/2020/ND-CP dated December 14, 2020; Coordinate effectively with inspectors from provincial departments and inter-agency inspectorates to limit, detect, and promptly handle violations; localities must strictly implement Conclusion No. 84-KL/TW dated June 21, 2024, of the Politburo on continuing to implement Resolution No. 23-NQ/TW of the 10th Politburo on continuing to build and develop literature and art in the new era.

The first Jazz Festival held in Nha Trang was highly praised.

Professional performing arts units have been actively developing new programs, performances, and plays to participate in competitions and art festivals organized by the Department of Performing Arts according to the 2025 work plan.

However, Director Xuan Bac pointed out that some of the State's policies regarding the field of literature and art have not been reformed, such as: the ranking and promotion mechanism for directors and actors; the special salary regime for directors and actors; the lack of a mechanism for training, nurturing, and attracting talent; and the system for paying royalties and copyright fees according to the Copyright Law.

Although the compensation system for artists and actors has improved, it remains low compared to the current situation. The current remuneration and salary levels for artists and performers are not attractive enough to draw professionals in the field of professional arts.

In 2025, the performing arts sector will continue to implement the Party's guidelines and policies, and the State's laws on performing arts and literature; continue to implement the Government 's Directives and Resolutions, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Projects and Plans on the development of performing arts and literature; and effectively carry out and ensure the progress of key tasks assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2025.

Complete the dossier for the draft Government Decree stipulating certain regimes and policies for civil servants and professional employees in public art institutions, to be submitted to the Prime Minister.

The audience enthusiastically supported the artists at the 2024 Outstanding Artists Award Ceremony organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Department of Performing Arts will finalize and submit to the Minister for promulgation a Circular stipulating the economic and technical norms for services related to organizing art programs to commemorate major holidays; the birthdays of Party and State leaders and prominent former leaders; the death anniversaries of recognized figures of the Party and State; and serving political and diplomatic tasks domestically and internationally; a Circular stipulating the economic and technical norms for services related to the preservation, restoration, staging, and organization of competitions, festivals, and performances of professional, traditional, representative, and unique arts; and a Circular stipulating the economic and technical norms for services related to the collection, research, organization, staging, and performance of works in the genres of opera, ballet, and symphony.

Along with that are circulars stipulating economic and technical norms for services related to collecting, preserving, transmitting, and promoting folk, traditional, typical, and unique art forms of ethnic groups; circulars stipulating economic and technical norms for services related to launching and organizing the creation of propaganda works serving political tasks, and artistic works participating in national professional art competitions, festivals, and performances; and circulars stipulating economic and technical norms for services related to supporting the creative activities of artists and writers to encourage creative talents and contribute to the formation of literary and artistic works with valuable content, ideology, and artistry at creative camps serving political tasks.

"We need to further strengthen investment in the fields of culture and arts, especially performing arts. There should be specific incentive mechanisms to encourage the younger generation to study traditional art forms to preserve and promote national cultural values, while attracting highly skilled and dedicated young talents to build and develop a successor generation in professional artistic creation and performance," shared People's Artist Xuan Bac.
