Many cases of severe burns when using super fast drain cleaner

On May 11, Gia Lai General Hospital announced that the unit had just treated a patient with severe facial burns due to an accident when using drain cleaner for the toilet. The victim was Mr. TVT (residing in Nghia Hoa commune, Chu Pah district, Gia Lai).

Previously, on May 8, Mr. T. bought a bottle of drain cleaner for use. On the bottle, it was written that it was a super fast drain cleaner with ingredients of water and Sulfuric Acid, along with a warning to keep out of reach of children, do not let the drain cleaner come into contact with skin, wear glasses and a mask when using.

WhenMr. T. poured the bottle of water into the toilet pipe, there was a loud explosion accompanied by a column of water splashing onto his face and hands. The areas of Mr. T.'s skin that was splashed with this solution caused pain and burning, so his family took him to the provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Through examination, the doctors determined that the patient had third-degree burns to the face, neck, and forearms due to corrosive substances, so they transferred Mr. T. to the Department of Traumatology - Orthopedics - Burns for treatment.

Regarding the use of this super fast drain cleaner, around September 2022, Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital also received a case of Ms. NTKH (residing in Pleiku City) who suffered burns on her hand due to using a super fast drain cleaner. The burn caused pain to Ms. H., the wound became infected and has now left an unsightly keloid scar after many months of treatment.

According to the representative of the Emergency Department (Provincial General Hospital), the ingredients of super fast drain cleaner contain a large amount of Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4), a quite dangerous acid.

This acid has extremely strong chemical properties, often causes deep burns when in contact with the human body, destroys tissue structures such as skin, fat, tendons, muscles... causing necrosis from the outside in. Therefore, people should not use this solution on their own because it is very dangerous, prone to risks, and can affect life.
