The Hanoi 10th grade exam score sheet of Nguyen Duc Khai (9C1 student at Archimedes Academy Secondary School) made many people admire when he got 3 perfect scores in Math, English and Specialized Math. The only subject he did not get a perfect score in was Literature, with 8 points.
With a total admission score of 48/50 (Math, Literature, English and specialized subjects with coefficient 2), Khai is not only the valedictorian of the 10th grade specialized in Math, but also has the highest score of all specialized groups in Hanoi this year. With this result, the male student was admitted to the Hanoi & Amsterdam High School for the Gifted by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

Ms. Pham Thi Thuy Ninh, Khai's mother, said she was very happy that her son had a more successful transition exam than expected. "I also did not think that my son would become the valedictorian of the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi. In addition to good preparation, perhaps he also had a little luck," Ms. Ninh shared.
Khai said that before taking the exam, he only set the goal of passing the entrance exam, not thinking about becoming valedictorian. This year's general math exam in Hanoi was not a challenge for Khai. In the specialized math exam, he only had difficulty with part b of the geometry test, but it did not take him too much time to conquer it before completing the exam.
Previously, Khai was also admitted to the 10th grade math class at the Natural Science High School and the Hanoi Pedagogical High School. At both schools, Khai was in the top 3 candidates with the highest scores.
Ms. Ninh said that since childhood, Khai had a passion for Mathematics and numbers. In first grade, her family chose to send him to Nguyen Sieu School with the hope that he would have an environment to build a good foundation in English right from primary school. When he reached secondary school, realizing that he had a great love for Mathematics, her family decided to let him major in Mathematics after passing the entrance exam to Archimedes Academy Secondary School.

Talking about his study secrets, Khai shared that for Math, he always uses a large notebook, about 500 pages thick, to take notes. He divides Algebra and Geometry into two separate notebooks. In each notebook, Khai will number the pages and make a table of contents at the end of the notebook to remember and easily look up knowledge when needed. "This will be the place to save ideas for me to handle exercises. This method is very convenient for looking up ideas during the learning process and also helps me control knowledge easily," Khai said.
The male student said that keeping a relaxed spirit during each exam is also very important. “Many students often feel pressured before the exam, or study too much, which makes them feel ‘confused’ when taking the exam. At the time close to each exam, I don’t study too much, take time to relax, but I also shouldn’t play games during this period,” Khai said.
With his efforts and effective learning strategies, Khai has won many awards, such as the Silver Medal in the 2021 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) and the Silver Medal in the International Mathematics Competition (IMC). In grade 9, he won first prize in the city-level Math competition for excellent students.
However, Khai's learning journey, like that of many other students, did not always go as expected. "In reality, I had to give up on many math problems, but the important thing is that I tried," Khai said.
Accompanying her child, Ms. Ninh said that the most memorable memory was in 8th grade when her child missed the chance to "skip a level" to be able to take the city's excellent student exam in Math, then had to switch to the IT exam.
“However, the time to review IT was not much, there were some “gaps” in knowledge so he did not get the expected results. During that period, Khai seemed very sad and disappointed. At that time, I encouraged him to stand up and be determined in the excellent student exam in grade 9 in Math. What made me happiest was that he quickly regained his spirit, tried again and made an effort to show himself by winning first prize in the city-level excellent student exam in Math last school year,” said Ms. Ninh.

Mr. Vo Quoc Ba Can, Khai's homeroom teacher and also his Math teacher for the past 4 years, assessed Khai as an intelligent, quick-witted student with special qualities. "Sometimes Khai has good ideas, even solving problems more concisely than me. He studies all the subjects of Math, but I think Arithmetic and Combinations are probably Khai's strengths."
During the teaching process, Mr. Can was most impressed by the way Khai systematized his lessons. “Khai often used a very large, thick notebook and numbered the pages himself. Then at the end of the notebook, he wrote down what ideas and methods were on which pages for easy reference. I was very impressed with this way of learning and often told the students of the next course about Khai’s way of learning,” Mr. Can said.
Khai said that after considering many opportunities, the male student decided to study the Math major at the Pedagogical High School for his high school years.
