Missing the land of learning...

Việt NamViệt Nam14/07/2024

After 1975, Dien Ban was like a giant minefield and the whole village was flooded with reeds. People evacuated and carried each other back to their hometowns, leaving the village deserted and empty.

A new life began with building thatched roofs, planting bamboo bushes, filling bomb craters, clearing mines and renovating fields... Our generation, from all over the country, followed our parents, walking barefoot on the country roads to school. The school was a three-room house built right on an empty lot.

Life was full of hardships, but Quang Nam - Da Nang in general and Dien Ban in particular began the search for, nurturing and fostering excellent students.

As for our excellent student team in the 80s, we all gathered to study at theeducation department, schools in Dien Phuong and Tu Quang pagoda...

The students were encouraged by their teachers to live in houses near their school. They studied for almost a whole semester before taking the national excellent student exam.

Tu Quang Pagoda (Dien Thang Bac) located next to Highway 1 is the place chosen to train many excellent students of Dien Ban.

One day, we studied at Nguyen Van Troi Secondary School. One day, we “practiced” at the Buddhist temple. Ms. Nam and Ms. Lu were our foster mothers, taking care of every meal.

Until now, many people, even though they have become grandparents, have traveled here and there, and lack nothing, still never forget that meal. Whenever we have a chance to meet, we mention "Mother Nam's and Mother Lu's rice is the most sticky, filling". When Mother Nam passed away, we went to see her off, and her whole family hugged her as if she were family.

The families who let us stay had reserved the best places in their houses for us to live and study. Almost every night the landlord sent his children to bring us “supplements” such as boiled peanuts, cassava, plums, guavas… that we had found in the garden.

Before packing up and returning home to take the big exam, Hai's mother (who lives opposite Tu Quang Pagoda) said in tears: "Do well on the exam, my son. In the future, no matter what you become, remember to come back and visit us!"

Our excellent students are nurtured and nurtured by the knowledge and passion of our teachers; by the love, care and aspirations of the people of this studious land.

Until now, we still have many questions about why Tu Quang Pagoda - a place of Buddha - was chosen to focus on training excellent students?

Teacher Nguyen Minh Hung, who has been associated with many generations of excellent students from Dien Ban and Quang Nam - Da Nang provinces, shared implicitly that wherever students feel most peaceful and are nurtured by the strongest belief, they will succeed.

And, that expectation came true. In the results of the excellent student exam for the 1982-1983 term, Dien Ban led the province in quantity; both grade 5 and grade 9 students won high prizes in Math and Literature. It can be said that Dien Ban achieved the best individual and team achievements in the province during the period 1981-1990. After that, many students continued to win national prizes.

Continuing the tradition of “Five phoenixes flying together”, many excellent students of Dien Ban are like phoenixes spreading their wings everywhere, in many fields. Many later became managers, scientists, lecturers, teachers, doctors, journalists, businessmen...

No matter who they are, whether they spread their wings in the four corners of the world, settle abroad or live in their homeland, but always in their hearts is a vivid image of the traditional value of good learning of Dien Ban.
