Tires

Tires are the parts of a vehicle that come into direct contact with the road. Therefore, the condition of the tires greatly affects safety while driving. Before each trip, you should carefully check your tires to detect problems early, such as underinflation, punctures, or worn treads. If your tires are more than 7 years old or show signs of damage, don't hesitate to replace them with new ones to ensure a smooth journey.

A helpful tip recommended by experts is not to pull the nail out of the tire if you find one, as this can cause the tire to deflate faster. Instead, you should go to the nearest garage for a proper repair.

These are the parts of the vehicle that need to be checked before each long trip (Figure 1).

Check your tires before every long trip to ensure a safer journey.

Braking system

Brakes are an extremely important component, especially when driving on steep mountain roads. Before a long trip, take your vehicle to a garage for a brake system check, including checking the brake fluid, brake pads, and brake discs. If you find worn or dirty brakes, clean or replace them to avoid risks during operation.

For disc brakes, after a period of use, the brake discs may warp due to environmental factors. In this case, resurfacing the brake discs will help rectify the situation and ensure better brake performance.

Coolant

Coolant plays a crucial role in maintaining a stable engine temperature. Especially in older vehicles, the cooling system is prone to degradation, leading to leaks or a lack of coolant. This can cause engine overheating, excessive heat, or even engine seizure during long journeys.

Before departing, check the coolant level in the reservoir and add more if necessary. If you detect any problems with the cooling system, address them immediately to avoid disruptions during your journey.

Windshield washer fluid and wiper blades

Although not directly related to the vehicle's performance, windshield washer fluid and wipers significantly affect a driver's visibility, especially in bad weather. Before your trip, ensure the windshield washer fluid reservoir is full and the wipers are working effectively. It's recommended to use specialized windshield washer fluid to avoid clogging and damage to the system.

Spark plugs, fuel injectors, intake manifold, air filter

These are the parts of the vehicle that need to be checked before each trip (Figure 2).

Before long journeys, drivers should check the spark plugs, fuel injectors, intake manifold, and air filter.

Components such as spark plugs, fuel injectors, intake manifold, and air filters play a crucial role in optimizing engine performance. If these parts are dirty or clogged, the vehicle may experience increased fuel consumption, overheating, and reduced efficiency. Therefore, you should check and clean these parts before every long trip. If the vehicle has been used for many years, taking it to a garage for inspection is essential.
