The "roses" who wield the pen

Although the journalism profession is always fraught with difficulties and pressure, many female journalists, driven by passion, have overcome these challenges. They know how to balance their assigned work with family responsibilities to successfully fulfill their duties.

" Journalism is a part of my life."

“I think that since I chose this profession, I can overcome any difficulties. Journalism is not just a job, but a part of my life.” This is the sentiment of Cao Thi Anh Tuyet, a reporter for the Specialized Programs section of the Quang Tri Provincial Newspaper and Radio Station.

Born into a family where her father was a journalist, Tuyet understood from a young age that it was a demanding profession. Through the stories her father told her after returning from field trips and witnessing his diligent work every day, her dream of becoming a journalist was nurtured. In 2002, Tuyet enrolled in the Faculty of Literature, majoring in Journalism, at Hue University of Science . After completing her university program in 2006, she was hired to work at the Arts and Special Programs Department of the former Quang Tri Provincial Radio and Television Station.

As a local reporter, she frequently travels to many places in the province, including remote and disadvantaged areas, to cover events. The travel is arduous, and she often works overtime, late at night, and even on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Despite the hardships, driven by her love and passion for journalism, and encouraged by her family, she always feels her work is meaningful and valuable.

"Having been involved in this profession for 19 years, perhaps the most profound memory for me is the field trip to Trieu Long commune, Trieu Phong district a few years ago, when I was doing a documentary about the plight of an elderly couple there whose three children were affected by Agent Orange."

After the report was broadcast, we received a lot of positive feedback from viewers, and many philanthropists contacted us to help the family and others in similar situations. This further strengthened my belief that journalism is not only about reflecting reality but also about being a bridge of love, a voice for those who need help,” Ms. Tuyet shared.

Beyond her work as a reporter and editor, Ms. Tuyet also serves as a broadcaster, hosting several programs for the station... Each role has provided her with invaluable experience. Ms. Tuyet further shared: “In my opinion, a quality journalistic work is not just a good article or a program, but also a bridge between reality and the public, the voice of conscience and social responsibility. I believe that when journalists dedicate themselves wholeheartedly and continuously improve, quality works will naturally emerge.”

With that perspective, after nearly 20 years dedicated to the profession, Ms. Tuyet has actively participated in many journalism awards and won high prizes, notably: Award A for impressive television work at the 2023 National Spring Press Conference "The Paris Agreement and 50 years of historic spring"; Award B for impressive radio work at the 2024 National Spring Press Conference "Preserving our roots through lullabies"; Award C for impressive radio work at the 2022 National Spring Press Conference "Folk songs of spring"; Award A - Quang Tri Journalism Award 2023 with the work "The Paris Agreement and 50 years of historic spring"...

Ms. Tuyet hopes that, in order to create better working conditions for female journalists, relevant authorities at all levels should prioritize women's participation in specialized training courses. She also hopes for timely and appropriate recognition for the contributions of female journalists.

Inspiring through reading

My first impression of announcer Nguyen Thi My Hang, from the Vinh Linh District Cultural, Information and Sports Center, was not only her expressive voice and charming face, but also her proactive approach to local news reporting and editing. With her passion and dedication to her profession, she has gradually established her role in the public eye, earning the respect and affection of her colleagues.

Ms. Hang's job is to produce local radio programs. Through many years of work, she has accumulated valuable experience as a broadcaster, which is how to convey the meaning of the work and the author's message, and how to make listeners understand and appreciate the beauty and topicality within it.

Ms. Hang shared: “Reading correctly is important, but to have a voice that resonates with the audience, a broadcaster must also read well and expressively. It's necessary to know where to pause and stop, and to change the tone of voice depending on the context of the content. Therefore, I always try to practice my reading skills every day. For many works, I have to read them multiple times beforehand, marking where to pause, stop, and continue reading to fully express the emotions, thereby conveying the information of the journalistic work to the public more quickly and effectively.”

Besides her duties as a broadcaster, to further her career, she actively participates in writing news articles and collaborating with central and local media agencies. Through collaboration with central and local media outlets, she has had the opportunity to improve her journalistic skills and experience. According to Ms. Hang: “This profession allows me to travel to many places, meet many people, and experience many different situations, helping me understand more about the diverse aspects of life. And when I became a broadcaster, reading the works of various authors, I felt as if I was simultaneously embodying the characters and the emotions of the authors. I feel a deep love for this profession and am secretly grateful that it chose me.”

Proud to be a young reporter.

Although she has only been in the profession for a few years and doesn't have a large number of journalistic works, Vo Thi Khanh Linh, working at the Vietnam Journalists Association in the province, always learns and hones her skills, expertise, and experience from senior journalists, seeks out new and unique topics, and gains practical experience to produce high-quality "intellectual creations" to serve readers.

Five years ago, after graduating from the Journalism and Communication Faculty of Hue University of Science, Ms. Linh applied to work as a contributor for Quang Tri Newspaper. There, she had the opportunity to work in a professional journalistic environment. Initially, lacking experience, she faced difficulties and challenges in her work; her first articles lacked complete information. However, after receiving feedback from senior colleagues, she began to love the profession. Then, several of her feature articles and reports were published, motivating her to work harder to produce higher-quality work.

In 2023, she was recruited to work at the Provincial Journalists Association as an editor for the special issue "Journalists and Homeland". In addition, she directly contributed articles to the issue. Her most memorable achievement was winning first prize in the first writing competition on "Workers and Trade Unions of Quang Tri" in 2024, organized by the Provincial Labor Federation, the Quang Tri Provincial Journalists Association, and the Labor and Trade Union Magazine, with her work "A Decent Negotiation". With the same work, Khanh Linh won the A prize at the 8th Quang Tri Provincial Journalism Awards in 2024.

I am constantly learning to improve my journalistic skills.

As a student, Nguyen Truc Phuong loved reading captivating and topical news reports and investigative articles. And, without realizing it, a love for journalism began to take root in her.

In 2020, Nguyen Truc Phuong graduated from the Journalism-Communications department of the University of Science, Hue University, and was recruited to work at the former Quang Tri Newspaper. Although she had some experience from collaborating with several newspapers during her student years, she still faced many challenges and difficulties when she first started working, as the reality of journalism was completely different from the knowledge taught in school. Recognizing that journalism is a difficult profession, with pressure regarding information and deadlines, especially for female reporters, her love for the profession motivated her to constantly strive. Throughout her work, Phuong actively learned from her senior colleagues about information gathering skills, approaching subjects, and discovering topics; she also absorbed both praise and criticism to improve her professional skills.

Despite her young age and limited professional experience, Phương, with her proactive attitude and the dedicated support and guidance from colleagues on how to gather information from multiple perspectives and construct rigorous and accurate arguments, has gradually matured in her writing.

“In my opinion, young journalists need to strive and dedicate themselves to creating valuable works. Especially in the digital age, where life moves every minute and every hour, we must constantly learn to improve our skills, expertise, and journalistic abilities. Most importantly, journalists must always maintain an optimistic attitude and love their profession. For me, happiness is simply contributing good, valuable articles to readers and receiving positive feedback from both the editorial board and the readers,” Ms. Phuong shared.

Not only does Truc Phuong excel in her professional work, but she is also an enthusiastic and dedicated Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union, actively participating in youth union and agency activities. In a short period of time working, with her efforts in fulfilling assigned tasks, from 2023-2024, Phuong was honored with a Certificate of Commendation from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; a Certificate of Commendation from the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of Quang Tri province; and won third prize and a consolation prize in the writing competition on vocational education organized jointly by the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs and Quang Tri Newspaper.
