Nikon acquires high-end camcorder manufacturer RED.

Nikon has just announced the acquisition of RED Digital Cinema, a renowned manufacturer of high-end digital camcorders, for an undisclosed price. This is Nikon's largest acquisition to date.

According to Neowin , founded in 2005 by Oakley founder Jim Jannard, RED Digital Cinema has established itself as a pioneer in digital cinema cameras. Headquartered in California (USA), the company has approximately 220 employees and has built a reputation with high-end cameras such as the RED One 4K and V-Raptor X. RED cameras have been used in countless feature films and television shows such as The Killer, Rebel Moon , and Queen's Gambit . It is a favorite brand of top cinematographers in Hollywood.

The acquisition will allow Nikon to leverage RED's expertise in digital cinema technologies such as image processing and color science . It also ends a patent dispute over video compression technology that began last year between the two companies.

In a statement, RED President Jarred Land said this was a "significant milestone" combining Nikon's optical heritage with RED's innovation. He said: "Together, Nikon and RED are poised to redefine the professional digital camera market, promising an exciting future of product development, and continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible in film and video production."

For its part, Nikon has expressed its goal of expanding into the professional digital video camera market using RED's experience and talent.
