Total global debt reaches record high.

According to a report by the Institute of International Finance (IIF), global debt increased by more than $4.4 trillion in the first quarter, reaching a record high of nearly $353 trillion.

According to the IIF report, increased US borrowing is one of the main reasons for the more than $4.4 trillion increase in global debt in the first quarter. This is the fastest quarterly increase since mid-2025, and the fifth consecutive quarter of increases.

According to Emre Tiftik, Director of Global Markets and Policy at IIF, the increase in US debt is mainly driven by the government sector, as Washington continues to borrow heavily. In China, the debt of non-financial enterprises has also increased rapidly since the beginning of the year, with a large proportion being state-owned enterprises. The rate of debt increase for this group is significantly higher than the increase in borrowing by the Chinese government.

Excluding the US and China, debt in developed markets decreased slightly. Conversely, debt in emerging economies , excluding China, rose to a record high of $36.8 trillion, primarily due to government borrowing.

Measured as a debt-to-GDP ratio, global debt currently stands at 305% of GDP, virtually unchanged from its level in 2023. However, debt trends are increasingly diverging across economies, with debt-to-GDP ratios declining in developed markets while continuing to steadily increase in emerging economies.

Norway, Kuwait, China, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia experienced the sharpest increases in their debt-to-GDP ratios, with each country recording increases of more than 30 percentage points.

Experts predict that pressure from defense spending, energy security, and investments in artificial intelligence will continue to push public and corporate debt higher in the medium and long term.
