The fear of drowning in Lam Dong during the summer

A series of tragic drowning incidents.

In recent days, Lam Dong province has witnessed a series of tragic drowning accidents involving children and students playing in rivers, streams, and waterfalls.

Most recently, on the afternoon of May 28th, a group of high school students from Gia Hiep commune went to Phu Xuan waterfall area to play. At around 3 PM, HTBM (16 years old, a 10th-grade student residing in Gia Hiep commune) unfortunately slipped and fell into a ravine about 8 meters deep while standing near the waterfall. At around 6:30 PM, the victim's body was found and brought up from the ravine.

Authorities are working together to retrieve the body of the deceased female student from the ravine.

A few days earlier, PTN (a 6th-grade student in Lang Biang ward, Da Lat) was also swept away by floodwaters while playing with a group of friends near the B'Nơr B stream.

The series of incidents that occurred at the beginning of summer has caused many parents to worry and has highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the management and supervision of children outside of school hours.

Faced with the increasing risk of drowning, local authorities, police forces, and organizations in Lam Dong province have intensified propaganda and warnings to raise public awareness about supervising children; advising students not to swim in streams or waterfalls or play in areas with deep water or dangerous currents.

Ms. Chu Thi Chinh, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Da Teh 2 commune and Secretary of the Youth Union of Da Teh 2 commune, said that the locality has installed about 75 warning signs in areas of rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes with a risk of drowning. In the coming time, the commune will continue to review and add more warning signs at potentially dangerous locations to strengthen the prevention of drowning accidents for children during the summer.

The Da Teh 2 commune youth union has put up signs prohibiting swimming in the lake area.

"In addition, the Da Teh 2 Commune Youth Union also organizes many summer activities for young people such as disseminating skills to prevent drowning and injuries, cultural and sports playgrounds, folk games and experiential activities to create a safe and healthy environment for children to play in during the summer," Ms. Chinh said.

Enhancing safe summer activities for children.

According to the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee, in recent times there have still been a number of incidents of insecurity and disorder, school violence, students violating the law, and accidents causing injuries that affect the health and lives of children.

In light of the above situation, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee requests that departments, agencies, and localities strengthen coordination in management, education , and ensuring the safety of children, students, and university students during the 2026 summer vacation.

The People's Committee of Lam Dong province has assigned the Department of Education and Training to take the lead in coordinating with local authorities, families, and mass organizations to organize safe and healthy summer activities; and to promote the dissemination of skills to prevent drowning, injuries, drug abuse, violence, and child abuse, especially in the online environment.

The Quang Tan commune police collaborated in raising awareness about preventing drowning and donated life jackets to underprivileged students.

Meanwhile, the Lam Dong Provincial Youth Union was tasked with organizing diverse summer activities for young people, incorporating the dissemination of legal information and skills to prevent accidents, injuries, drowning, and child abuse.

The Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee also requested localities to strengthen inspection and supervision of safety risks for students, especially drowning, traffic accidents, and school violence; and at the same time, enhance the responsibility of families in managing their children during the summer break.
