Where kindness is sown.

One early winter morning, students brought warm jackets, neatly arranged on their desks, to donate to underprivileged children in disadvantaged areas. These seemingly small acts have been taking place for many years in schools throughout the province. There, alongside teaching literacy, the schools also teach students an important lesson: to care, to share, and to live for others. And it is these lessons that will stay with them long after they leave school.

Where kindness is sown.

Hoa Binh Ethnic Boarding High School collaborated with Kim Truy Primary and Secondary School (Kim Boi district) to donate helmets and gifts, spreading the spirit of sharing and responsibility towards the community.

From small actions

At Kim Thuong Ethnic Boarding Junior High School (Xuan Dai), for many years, the sight of teachers bringing rice and blankets to the boarding area for students has become familiar. Many students come from remote villages with difficult family circumstances, only returning home once a week. Therefore, in addition to teaching, teachers also take care of their meals and clothing. The school maintains a boarding meal program and organizes donations of books, clothes, and school supplies to help students attend school. For many students, the care and attention of their teachers and friends is the reason they continue to overcome difficulties and go to school.

Not only in mountainous areas, but also in many schools in more affluent regions such as Viet Tri, Phu Tho , or Vinh Yen, Hoa Binh, activities like "saving money in piggy banks to help poor students," "shared clothing closets," "donating school bags to friends," and "supporting students to go to school" have become regular occurrences. Each classroom is a small place where students cultivate the habit of sharing: sometimes a few thousand dong put into a piggy bank, sometimes a few old storybooks or reference books, sometimes a usable warm jacket... The gifts may not be large, but the way students give them to each other is noteworthy. They not only help a specific friend, but gradually develop the habit of caring for others. Through such concrete actions, students are taught compassion not through long lectures, but through things they do themselves and participate in. When a student shares their meal with a friend, or saves a new notebook for a friend who doesn't have one, the lesson of sharing is naturally formed.

It can be seen that in many schools, the education of compassion does not begin with grand gestures, but rather with very familiar things in daily school life. And it is through these small but frequently done actions that students' behavior towards their friends, teachers, and the community gradually changes in a more positive direction.

Let's get to the big lessons.

Through specific activities in each classroom and school, the education of compassion in students has been a focus of the education sector in recent years, being implemented as an important part of comprehensive education. Beyond just volunteer movements, many schools have integrated education on sharing and responsibility towards the community through experiential activities, class activities, youth group activities, and extracurricular activities. When students participate in activities such as donating to help poor students, visiting families of war veterans, caring for war cemeteries, supporting academically weak students, etc., they are not only participating in a collective activity but are also learning how to live with those around them.

According to Mr. Lo Quoc Tai, Principal of Kim Thuong Ethnic Boarding Junior High School (Xuan Dai), the school's goal is not only to teach knowledge but also to shape students' character. In particular, compassion, a spirit of sharing, and a sense of responsibility to the community are values that need to be instilled from a young age. Therefore, alongside teaching, the school focuses on building a safe and friendly learning environment where students not only learn but are also cared for, respected, and taught to care for others.

Where kindness is sown.

The friendly school environment at Kim Thuong Ethnic Boarding Junior High School contributes to nurturing lessons about sharing and responsibility in each student.

In reality, schools that effectively maintain life skills and values education see positive changes in relationships within the school. Students become more conscious of helping their friends, conflicts among students decrease, and many students from disadvantaged backgrounds receive support from their peers and teachers to continue their education. When students show concern for their friends and share with those less fortunate, the school environment becomes not only a place for learning but also a place for character development. Mr. Tang Van Quang, Vice Principal of Hoa Binh Ethnic Boarding High School, shared: "Education aims for holistic development; knowledge can help students go far, but how they treat others is what determines the kind of person they become. Therefore, spreading acts of caring and sharing in schools not only helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds but also contributes to the formation of a humane educational environment."

Education is not just about imparting knowledge, but also about cultivating how people treat each other. From classroom activities to volunteer trips to more disadvantaged areas, students learn to care, share, and live responsibly within the community. When compassion is nurtured from their school years, it's not just an educational activity, but a way for schools to contribute to shaping individuals who think of others – a quality society always needs in its adult children.
